Solo Werks coilovers GOOD or BAD?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In need or shocks and struts bad! Figured I'd go coilovers anyway so I came across these one ECS..

    https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_S4...ch/Solo_Werks/

I am on a tight budget so these would be a great buy if they're a decent coilover. Anyone here got these and how is the ride? I don't care to go to low but do not want the ride to be super stiff. Prefer ride to be like stock stiffness or softer preferb. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I have no experience with those because i am running ST's on mine. No complaints on the ride quality and with the April rebate going on they are not too much more than the ones you are looking at. Talk to one of the vendors here and they should be able to hook you up with a decent price. Just my 2 cents.

Wow, to rate a coilover worse than racelands is shocking. Those soloworks must be total crap.

lol i am currently running them and i can agree with this, on any crap road you are literally bouncing up and down its pretty sad. However i am lowered about 24.5" ground to fender so that doesnt help. they are 500$ coils i wasnt expecting much but i actually wish i had spent a extra 300$ and got some vogtlands instead.

Oh man! Thank you so much for saving me on this.. I did have a nice set of coils on my previous B5 that the PO installed and loved them. I dont remember the name unfortunately but I know they weren't STs. I remember them being a pinkish color.. Lol sorry to be vague but thats all I have to go on with that. If anyone can relate the name of them I thank you in advance!

If you want a mild drop and stock like suspension stiffness, check out the Tein S-tech springs. I run them on my car, and enjoy them for 100+ miles a day.

Coupled with a set of Billy sport or koni yellows and it should be a nice setup.

IMO, if you aren't ready to drop big bucks on a high end coilover setup, then a good set of struts/springs is the way to go.

I understand and I was thinking of doing stock shocks with some sport springs. Definitely dont want to lower it too much maybe .4-.5 inches tops. How much of a drop are those Tein springs?

That's my car, with stock struts still. It actually rides great, and hasn't blown the struts. Less body roll, but not stiff. I had planned on adding struts sooner but haven't felt a need to mess with it yet.

Wow, this is the first time I've ever read bad things about these coilovers. I've done much research because I was going to be getting them myself. All extremely positive reviews.

As did I, and I won't rule them out as a horrible product but they are not for me stiffness wise..

As an owner of Solo Werks S1 coilovers, they are bouncy as shit before they settle and break in. I have the very last set of the first production run for these coilovers and I'm glad I went with them.

After a few weeks they were VERY OEM comfort wise while retaining the sportier handling of the car. They also have the thickest zinc coating on the market in this price range.

I had an issue with one of the front struts when I bought the kit and I detailed it in this video to them. They told me one of the seals within the shock must have been defective. I got both struts rebuilt under warranty. Extremely easy company to deal with.
    https://youtu.be/lGQILOaYFPs

The founders of Solo Werks were also the CEOs of KW at one point before branching off to create their own company.

    I would buy them again

I too have not heard of bad reviews for our b5. I have a set of them and front control arms sitting in a box for about 4 months now... one of these days I'll get them installed and post a initial and few weeks later review. No promises when that will actually happen...

You'll want to set the coils to 3.5" of threads up front and about 2" of threads for the rear from the very last threadl. It'll set you around 24.5" FTG as a good start point.

I finally installed my Solo Werks S1 Coilovers and brand new front control arms, sway bar end link, and both front strut mounts. At this point I'll only driven maybe 20 miles in the last 24 hrs so they have not settled what so ever at this point. My initial impressions are hard to gauge as my car has 177K on it and I bought it with 80K... meaning I don't have a good point of reference on how the "stock" ride felt when it was new and how it was before the install was riding pretty sloppy... That said, with less than a day of driving, yes I confirm they are a little bouncy, but certainly nothing scary where I think I going to loose traction. The car is extremely flat in hard corners, and reduced nose-dive during braking. I forgot to measure before and after the install, but I certainly did not slam it. I think the front is 1-1.5 inches lower and the rear is maybe 0.5-1 inch. These picture don't show a good angle of how it sits, but it doesn't really matter at this point as we all know it's going to settle more as I drive. I plan on giving a full review in July after I put a solid 4 weeks of commuter driving on it.

Looks good. Definitely an OEM set height in those pictures. They really soften up around the 2-3 month range if a daily driver. Too bad they don't make these for my Allroad haha

Front 25in ftg and 25.5in in rear. So about a 1inch under stock height. I might lower the rear another 0.5 inches.

I forgot to do the dampers priming so I hope I don't damage anything.

I would have done it to be sure. Good thing I did because that one shock failed internally, as I posted above

Would getting these and swapping in my H&R springs be worthwhile? I am currently sitting on H&R's with a blown Bilstien sport strut in the rear. Planning on replacing all 4 struts but for about the same cost I could get these. Not even sure if its possible, opinions?

It would probably ride like donkey because the shocks are valved for SW springs. You can experiment and report back though. I'm also unsure whether or not they sell struts

If you're looking for a low stiff sport ride I just installed Bilstien B14's on my 08 avant. I live in the mountains so I'm always shifting weight hard around gnarly corners and the body roll compared to the stock susp. Is significantly decreased. $1000 for the coil over set but completely worth it in my opinion!

Solo-Werks is alright. I had them on my B6. However I went with ST on my B7 and it is much better IMO. IF you go too low with Solo-Werks, it seems that the dampers don't do a thing. ST has good comfort at all levels. ST's also have better handling. Made in Germany vs Made in China...

If you only need dampers I'd just get a set of Bilsteins and call it a day. Also had Bilstein B8's on a different B6 with OEM sport springs and they were fantastic.
