B9 A4/S4 manual transmission

I just received some exciting news from one of my salesman. B9 A4 with a manual trans should be available to order as of 11/16 this year most likely as a 2018MY. We've also, got word that they are strongly considering a manual transmission for the B9 S4 for the 2018MY. That's literally all that I know at this time and I will give updates as soon as I know more. Seems like Audi is looking at a DSG only launch with manual to follow, much like VW did with the Golf R. Hope this news cheers some people up!

If I'm ever to buy another Audi, it's going to have 3 pedals, I hope it's an S4/S5, but I'll go TT-RS if I have to! Like that's really a have-to. Lol

Either way, this is great news if it's backed by intel from AoA and not just a salesman getting his info from the same internet forums we are, creating a vicious cycle.

There are some that prefer the reliability of the ZF 8HP transmission over the problematic Audi DSG.

However praying that the ZF still keeps the dual clutch. I received a ray of hope from a technical link someone posted here that the S4 may not necessarily get a rubbish torque converter after all. If it does, prayer will be shifted to the S4 getting a 6 or 7 speed manual. Otherwise the 340xi is priced nicely.

HE did confirm an Audi RS 3 though, but said it won't be for a while.

The B9 launched with an S-tronic = DSG (not a tiptronic ) for the 2.0 Tfsi 190 HP (I drive one :D ) But is now also available with manual gearbox ( only 190 HP ) (in europe only i guess )
The 252 HP 2.0 TFSI still commes with only an S-tronic

I am fully aware of that fact lol. This salesman however has been with Audi since 1985 and is held in very high regard by my dealership and Audi Corporate alike. I only made the thread because it was him I heard the information from.


I am assuming all of the conjecture so far is more along the lines of the S4 getting the manual rather than the A4.

I will double check with a source as well (not as long tenured as your 1985 guy but will check again)....but I saw said source on Saturday and confirmed no manuals at all coming Stateside that goes for the next TT-RS, S4, S5 coupe & S5 sportback (4 door ) my lease to my 2014 S4 6MT is off lease next year so I was trying to plan the next car, but if there are no 3rd pedals, I may just buy mine at the end of lease.
the R8 went auto only too
sucks but less than 5% of all Audi's sold (was quoted 3%) that were offered in a manual here in the States the last 3 years

Yeah, like I said it was still just being considered and not fully off the table yet. No guarantee of a definite yes, but from what I was told it would not be until the second MY of the B9 S4

Thanks man! What kills me is that AoA can make a shit load more if they make the car offered in a manual as standard equipment and let everyone option up to the automatic...it's not like they don't offer it at all, they are producing manuals for other regions aka everywhere except the US market, & Audi are still one of the German manufacturers that build outside the US and ship across, so the tooling is still there.

Exactly, that's the worst part. Even if they it so they could only be special ordered, there would still be people who would do it! They'll still be making plenty of manuals for the rest of the world.

As always it's the government that's a big part of this. Every single car model has to be approved in order to be sold. If they take out the auto and put in a manual the have to certify it again and that's not cheap.

I've come to terms with keeping my 14' S4


Looking forwards to a manual M3 next year or 18' though.


Can't say how disappointed I am. Maybe we'll eventually get an RS4 Avant someday and I'd consider that in auto I guess. The idea of buying anything other than a truck unless forced in automatic is crazy to me.

talk is talk but it sounds like Audi might me listening to show feed back...time will tell.

I can tell you that all the " we can't say stuff" is CRAP for any brand to do. They will lose folks to other brands with out a manual so why not just bait the trap and say that they do plan or will not offer a manual .

Car & Driver article states the new A4 will have a manual in early 2017, perhaps hope for the B9 S4 also making it across as a manual?!? Nothing confirmed by AoA to their dealerships yet though.

Just perused Audi's online mag, no. 110, published a few days ago. On page 6 of the A4 article, it's stated that a manual will be available later this year. Seems to be about the first official confirmation on the issue. Good news, if true.

you can extend your lease....I inquired bc my lease is up next summer and was worried that a manual S4 may be delayed after the auto's, like what they are doing to the A4

I want to second this. I had a 150TDI rental for a few weeks in Europe and the manual is very nice. I would love to have one for an S4 in a couple of years.

Correct, just got back from training myself. Don't remember when the S4 is supposed to drop, however I did see a fully camouflaged S5 Sportback while at the training center.

Yes, MMI controls are re-located.
