B5 S4 Upper Oil Pan Replacement: Need Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short, a few weeks back I hydroplaned and destroyed both oil pans, oil pump, chain and oil cooler. I've removed all bolts from the pans, removed what was left of the lower pan, and now am trying to remove the upper pan. The upper pan seems to be stuck in the rear (passenger side) corner by a cylindrical piece that sticks out about a half centimeter on one side and a centimeter on the other (in reference to the new pan). I have removed all bolts from the back of the pan, and to make sure, I put the old bolts into corresponding positions in the new pan. The pan will move quite a bit on all sides but wont come down where that cylinder is which is in between two other parts of my engine, the transmission and something else. I have been at this job nearly every day for 3 weeks trying to figure out what to do to finish it and am in some serious need of help as I need to find a way to get it back home in a month after school ends.

First, is there any advice for removing the upper oil pan from my engine, and secondly, is there anyone out there in the Southern Philadelphia/Medford, NJ region willing to help me finish this job? I have bought all replacement parts, including all fluids, gasket, filter and pans and just lack the knowledge to complete the task.

My car is at a friends house sitting in a barn for the time being. Right now it's on jack stands and I have access to a large assortment of tools including low and high torque impact wrenches.

I believe the cylindrical piece you are referring to, is the oil return line for the turbo? yeah? no?

I think subframe needs to removed to fully remove the upper pan. The only thing that holds the upper pan to the block, after the oil pump has been fully removed, is the m6 boots (12~14 can't remember) and the two m8 bolts in the rear. Two of the m6 bolts hold the pan to the rear main seal and can be hard to see.

This^ and I'd recommend remove the engine if you have the means, hoist, stand, and like a wooden pallet is what I mean hah I know it will take more time but every step along the way would be so much easier

Thanks for the Pictures. I had already removed the subframe and the pump/chain were destroyed by the impact of the 8 inch margin that I slammed into. I was really hoping to not have to remove my engine since I don't have access to a hoist. But, thanks for all of the information, I'll see what I can get done. Also, in the picture above, The corner I'm talking about is the far left corner of the pan if you're looking straight at the screen. Thats where my pan is stuck. Everything else will move but that.

jumpstv4. you are a genius, removing the oil pump gear instead of struggling with it.

for the record, i know it can be done without removing the subframe, its just a real pain in the ass. and doing it without a hoist of some sort it probably not gonna happen.
