    Tow hook question

Alright so I might get flamed for this but here it goes , I'm trying to make a license plate bracket in the tow hook location. So far I've come up with a plan of drilling a hole in the center of my current license plate bracket and just having a bolt run through with washers on each side with a nut on the inside ''in-between the bracket and bumper'' so that I can just tighten the nut to fully adjust my bracket to sit level.

I brought my stock tow hook into the store with me to see what thread and size I would need. It ended up working into the 3/4 fine thread bolt in the store and seemed to hold very well, So I went on and bought a 3/4 inch bolt and nut with washers. Once I got home my 3/4 inch bolt wouldn't screw into the tow hook location. Am I getting something wrong here? I checked over 5 times in the store to make sure my tow hook would screw well into the 3/4 inch nut mounted on the wall in the home depot.

Does anyone know what size would actually work for this?

    Thanks again
