2.79 is nothing. I owned my E55 when gas was almost 5 dollars a gallon. 10 mpg was fun but expensive.

Higher octane levels...cleaner burning gas, also would give better mileage

Ain't that the truth. Crude prices go up over night and all of a sudden gas goes up. But that Crude increase is a month out from affecting current gas prices. But they go up anyways. And if Crude goes down it takes a month for the price affect to see the streets. lol. What logic is that lol

This is a specific issue of top tier brands overcharging.
We discussed the outrageous top tier premium pricing a while back and it hasn't gotten better. A BP dealer told me the dealers are overpricing because it's such a niche' market. Top tier premium should be 15% more than regular in normal markets. Your example is 40% higher and I've seen worse than that.
Find a good dealer that is not overcharging and give them your business. Or, buy the inferior premium and put in some gas additive. Or split the 93 top tier premium with regular in 2 transactions. These guys shouldn't get away with this.

I'm seeing this a lot now. A $0.40 surcharge for premium versus regular used to be the max I'd see.

Same in FL, big difference in gas price between 87-93, and our magical E85 gas is below $2/gal (IIRC $1.59 the last time I filled).

You should just start trading the crack spread if it is that easy.

its due to the lower gas prices. the lower the gas price for regular the larger the spread to premium. when gas prices go up the difference goes down. I remember reading an article about it over the summer when the gas in my area was 4+ a gallon the premium was only 15c difference. That's just how it goes. I still look it as savings from when it was 3/gal

Its just flat out price gouging. the overhead cost is X profit is Y and the only cost that moves is the cost of the oil Z. So when oil moves the prices should all move in unison not exponentially. I get a few cents here and there for whatever. But 50-80c difference when oil is low vs like 10-15 when oil is high doesn't make much sense. Its gas logics that no one will understand.

It was nice while it lasted $26.00 to fill the Audi was the lowest point and E85 is the same price as 89 Octane here in MD.. So no savings there just couple cents..

It's either 85 or 90 cents more here to. It was just about 5 bucks last summer then went down to 1.89 now it's 2.69. And that's for 91 not 93.... So dumb. Does anyone have experience running e85 in their b5 s4?

Another reason for the widening price gap is the increase in domestic/North American shale oil. For whatever reason, crude produced from shale is richer in low octane components and easier to turn into regular unleaded. Meanwhile, foreign produced oil is more easily turned into higher octane fuel. I don't know the science behind all of this, but basically as North American production increased, regular unleaded dropped in price, but premium didn't follow suit at quickly.

With that being said, I still consider anything over 50 cents above unleaded to be considered gouging a bit. Definitely watch out if you fill up at stations that only advertise the regular unleaded price on their signs. Pulled in to one place only to see premium at $2.80/gallon when regular was only $2.00

Around here (everywhere else too I assume) e85 follows the gasoline pricing trend. It's always ~30% cheaper than 91, but when 91 goes up, so does corn.

Price gouging is an overly simplistic, and incorrect, reason.

You do not understand how the oil/gas industry works, so do not try to explain it. Please.

Do some research on upstream versus downstream. Believe it, or not, extracting the raw material from the ground and then pumping a refined product into your car is a bit more complicated than your X, Y, and Z...

Yea its always been a $0.10 increment in fuel types 199, 209, 219.. Not sure why all of a sudden that most chains are marking up the premium fuel now.

Not any in NW CT and we have a lot of them here. It's odd, there are no Shell stations in upstate NY at all, so I fill up over border in MA on my way upstate every Friday, it's .20 cheaper than CT.

In our area, I'm seeing the wide premium pricing spread for top tier gasoline brands only. The other brands like Sunoco, Wawa, Giant etc do not have such wide spreads. Since it's only a few cents more per gallon to make "top tier" gasoline, I can only describe this as opportunistic pricing. I wonder what the wholesale prices actually are for each grade and if the dealers are the ones taking advantage.

At almost every fuel station around where I live there is a roughly 90 cent difference from 87 to 93 octane ...BUT when I am near my work it is a bit more ghetto and the Chevron there only has a 40 cent difference between 87 and 93 (it competes with a Racetrack station next to it). Yes, it is 50 cents per gallon cheaper. I just noticed it when I was forced to stop there. Its very interesting seeing the price differences in different neighborhoods around here.

It seems to me that when oil goes down, gas prices go down but there is a significant lag. When oil prices rise, gas prices rise immediately. And the bastards in the Oil industry know there is nothing we will or can do about it. Gas is a drug and we are addicted. We will pay whatever they decide to charge.
