vibration in steering wheel at high speeds

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys, been getting some vibrations at higher speeds around 120km/h in my steering wheel. they are very random and sometimes arent as strong as other times. I had some random spacers in the car before and swapped out to 15mm ECS tuning spacers in the back and 10mm H&R spacers in the front now. the vibrations improved but they are still there. the car is on stock wheels with 255/35/19 Toyo Proxe T1s

    So far i have:

-gotten new upper control arms, lower seem to be okay.
-2 wheel balances, however none of these were road force balances.
    -wheel alignment
-have also got brand new rotors and pads as well.

the car has had a lot of other work done as well but i dont think any of the other stuff would affect this issue.

any idea where i should begin to diagnose such an issue?

might sound stupid, but do you have snow/ice in your wheels sometimes ?

Is there any vibration under braking? If not I'd think pads and rotors could be eliminated as the cause.

i would try a road force balance, unless the vibration is under braking, then could be warped rotors. i had the same situation with a regular balance that got sorted out with a road force.

I dont have any shaking in the brake pedal while i brake its just the same general shake that i get driving. I mean the rotors arent even 1000 km old so i would think they are not it?

Jakeboy: i thought it might be debris or snow in wheels but i cleaned em out real good during my last car wash. no dice.

I guess i will be looking at getting my third wheel balance in the last 1.5 months lol

Just take the front spacers off and try that first. I bet it's the spacers. Or a bent wheel.

which spacers should one run in the front for these cars? I have heard ECS, H&R, MTM are good choices

When you run spacers, you have to make sure the wheel is center on the hub perfectly, and I mean PERFECTLY. I use ECS 10mm spacers and always tighten the wheels on by hand as much as I can with no load on the tire, then lower the car just enough to where the tire touches the ground and I can torque it down. I've noticed that if you just zip the wheel bolts on and don't be careful, you'll get a vibration. When I take my time, I don't have any issues.

For what it's worth, I switched to wheel studs which makes this all a lot easier.

They're all good. The only real issue is needing them to be hub-centric (the extending lip to secure the spacer on the hub). The problem is when you get to the smaller spacers (10mm and below) many of them don't have that lip any more. This leads to vibrations as the spacer is not centered on the hub and causes vibrations. The only 8mm that I know of that still have this lip are a special set of H&R. At 10mm, they should already have the lip, but just take them off and drive the car to isolate the issue first, and then we can work on the next steps LOL

yea i do this same process. I use two hangers and then lightly tight all the bolts. then shake the wheel and tighten just a little more. then lower the car where it it just touches the floor and torque em down. then drive it. and re torque them.

I really like how these spacers look on this car, would suck to get rid of em :S

Did you take the spacers off yet to see if it still does it?

i have not yet. i have only replaced them with better spacers. will try that this weekend.

does anyone here run with 10mm spacers in the front? there must be a way to have spacers without vibrations

i just followed the regular bedding processes. moderate consistent braking in the first 500 miles. making sure not to overheat the rotors. when i sat at lights i made sure not to keep the pedal pressed in hard to avoid heat transfer to one specific part of the rotor for too long.

    the pads are OEM

Take one front wheel off and put the spacer into the wheel. The fit should be snug.

I would post up a video, but it appears youtube is down at the moment. If youtube comes back up you can see the video here:

If it isn't a hubcentric/spacer issue I would recommend a slightly more aggressive bed in procedure

both the H&R and ECS spacers were pretty snug. should they be able to rotate on the hub as well or is that a bad sign?

I will redo this test once i get home tonight.

I would just remove the spacers and see how it drives for a few days. It's a simple way to eliminate something which is the number 1 differential for myself and many others.

If it's not specific to braking only, I highly doubt it's pad deposits/"warped " rotors.

Vibration at speed comes from rotating components. Do you have traditional screw type hose clamps around your cv boots or do you have traditional oem ear clamps? Wheel balance, axle condition, wheel spacers, wheel bearings, tru-ness of brake discs, tire wear, rim condition.

Did you ever find the cause of the vibration?
