RS5 Interior button or switch for Bilstein project

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looking forward to installing some Bilstein coil-overs with RideControl in my RS5. The switch they provide doesn't match the style I want so I am exploring a way to install a custom switch in the center console next to the Drive Select button.

Any comments on this solution and recommendation on a switch that would fit in that area?

    Thanks

Thats not a bad idea but I dont know what you need to get it done. When I did mine, I just put the button in the ash tray and took out the lighter. Although now I have the iRC module and dont really need the button at all since I can use the app. That and I no longer switch settings because the auto settings are much better than being only in sport or comfort mode. But with the button in the ash tray area you can close the cover and not have to see that it doesnt match anything in the car.

Is the IRC module an additional component? I thought that came with the RideControl setup? But I get your point...

The only thing is that I was going to install a Passport 9500ci in the ashtray, not sure there is room for both?

I had the same issue, took out the coin holder, had a machine shop fabricate the holder with a hole so the button can go into and had the whole thing wrapped in CF to match the trim. Turned out "ok", still wish I had bought the IRC module and not had to mount the button IMO. Good luck

I like the idea of not using the switch at all and just using the IRC module.

How do you like the overall ride on the various settings?

So the iRC is a separate add on module. It goes for around $450 new depending on where you get it from.

For me, this suspension should have only come this way. The ride to me is much better since the controller is looking to change from comfort to sport and back all the time based on what the car is doing. To me the car was a little bouncy without the iRC in comfort mode and now that is all gone. I put it in the auto mode (sport sub-setting) and havent made a single change since then. Not sure how much time I have this weekend, but I am heading down to LA (Santa Monica) this weekend if you want to check it out. I will be down Friday by lunch and heading home most likely Monday morning.

I would like to come check it out but will not be able to make it up to Santa Monica this weekend. Thanks for the offer and and info on the ride quality, very helpful!

I highly recommend getting the IRC module - footballpro(?) on this board had one for sale a while back. It turns your system from a basic configuration to one that is much more intelligent/sensitive/tunable. The standard system takes the composite acceleration forces and sets your threshold for going into sport mode based on this - with the IRC module you can separate lateral from transverse acceleration. You may not necessarily want to go into sport if you're just stepping on the throttle in a straight line for instance.

I've got the IRC module but prefer to have the button installed, it's a pita to pull the app up to switch the system into all time sport if I go canyon driving.

Agreed, auto mode is pretty nice and I usually leave it in this mode for my commute but from time to time I lock it in sport, nice to do it on the fly.

There's room for the v1 remote display and the button in the ashtray - but he way I configured my button, I lose the ability to easily access the shifter lock out (dsg).

If you went for an existing dash button, how would you know what mode you are in? The iRC system is 3 modes with different button light configurations for each mode, you'd be hard pushed to replicate that on an existing button.

The cigar lighter is the only real sensible position for the iRC button. Slide open the ash tray to reveal the button when you need it and hide it away when you don't. Rocket Tech's install above is very neat, I like that.

This really helps, I will be going the same route with the button replacing the lighter.

Excellent point, had not considered that - Thanks!

Bilsteins installed - went with button located where cigarette lighter use to be (like Rocket Tech's pic).

Its only been a few days but I am completely satisfied with this setup and performance of these coil-overs.

Be sure to run the calibration via the phone app to make the accelerometer "smart". Best to do so on a decently windy road so there's good separation between turning versus straight line acceleration.
