Awaiting 01E kit for S6 Avant...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This will likely become a 'JTF's 01E kit into S6 Avant build thread' in the coming weeks. I'm eagerly awaiting the kit, who I purchased from Phil @audis4parts.com 4.5 weeks ago. I found Phil easy to talk and he kindly answered all my questions. He suggested I go with the OEM B5 RS4 clutch and 034's lightweight, single-mass, billet aluminum flywheel. I planned to go that route until I noticed JHM also sells a clutch/flywheel kit, but with the B7 RS4 clutch, for the same price. The B7 RS4 pressure plate has some merits over the B5, including metal mechanism (rather than plastic). Here's the JHM clutch/FW kit I purchased, which has already arrived:

    https://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catal...27t-p-822.html

I chose Coventry Motorcar, hosts of the famous east coast 'S-Fest', to perform the installation. My friend Scott, whom I've known for years, actually since the days we were both driving around in our B5 1.8T's, is the manager there. He used to have a UrS6 Avant and now drives a RS6, so is genuinely interested in doing the work. I haven't attended S-Fest in a few years but recall meeting a few of you other Audigeeks the last time I did and I'd certainly try harder to make it this summer, post successful 6-speed conversion. =)

Please feel free to share your thoughts on my clutch/FW combo, or ask any questions, comment, etc.

Phil just provided me an update, letting me know my kit is coming out of a 2003 A6 2.7T with 127K miles and it will likely be shipped in the coming week.

    Thanks,

Coventry Motorcar always has a handful of cool and interesting Audis.

Congratulations and good luck! The waiting is always the hardest part :)

Yes they do. The previous owner of my car actually purchased it there and they had done the TB before he took ownership. I bought it on 6/1/11 with 80K miles and it now has 99K.

The only items I'm not 'sold' on are the clutch & flywheel. Not sure if I should have gone with stock DMFW, spacer, and B5 RS4 clutch. Decisions, Decisions. Too late now. I guess I need to make the most of it. I doubt you can go too 'wrong' with JHM. We'll see. Any input welcome!

    Thanks,
    -Jeff

You did the right thing. The B7 clutch kit will be every bit as good as the B5 that's for sure. And there are no real benefits these days to the DMFW. People claim there are, and you're less 'likely' to have clutch chatter from a DMFW, but people rarely report chatter from the Billet FW too. The occurance is so low that I wouldn't worry about it.
Awesome project, and hope it turns out for you.
But, keep on top of Phil @ S4parts. He's a SUPER nice guy, but...watch for delays and excuses. Nothing against him or the business, but...the delays and excuses from them kind of wear you out after a while.

Thanks for the reply, rollerton. This is great - SteveKen (rs6.com) and rollerton on the same night. ;-) Actually, I do consider you guys very informative so thanks for all your forum contributions! Thanks for the vote of confidence with my clutch & FW choices. Also thanks for the 'heads-up' on Phil. I more or less get the same impression, so we'll shall see...

Sounds like this will be a good thread to follow.
I designed the SFest logo, T-Shirt for 2003 SFest and... had to sleep in the back of my urS6 that night at Paul's house.

    Thompson,
I hope it will be. I'll make sure to have Scott (pal who's the GM there) take pics and post them (or text them to me so I can post them). I have a T from 2001. I also attended 2002 but haven't been back. In the back of your car, eh? Is your urS6 an Avant, I hope?

Haa, that night I wish it was an Avant. But no... had to curl up in the back seat hobo style. If I can remember correctly, didn't really matter, sun was up in a few hours anyway.

My newer S6 is proudly an Avant yes, see avatar.

Skip the aluminum FW and get TTV billet steel one instead. You will enjoy it more and the car will have less chatter due to a little more mass than aluminum FW.

When you're done, maybe we can compare to my allroad . I am in WH.

Too late now, as I already have the clutch/FW kit referenced above. I've since seen the TTV one and I'm impressed. A few advantages to the kit I ordered, is that it's the only one that utilizes the B7 RS4 clutch. The others all use the B5 RS4 clutch or another. However, this can also been a con as if I want to replace the FW with a steel one, I also have to replace the clutch - it's a unit that was made for each other. The other plus is that I don't have to run a non OEM spacer with the FW.

You're really in WeHa? Is your AR silver? I think I've seen it around.

Not true. AMD utilizes b7 rs4 clutch parts in their kits. I and Julex are both running amd clutches with the ttv flywheel

AMD managed to modify B7 RS4 clutch so that it can bolt to any B5 FW, so we are using the best that can be gotten for reasonable money and TTV is the thing to get.

I've read quite a few stories of JHM B7 RS4 kit fusing its clutch Disc with FW during daily driving activities. Material choice that can fuse with steel given enough heat is present and aluminum FW is the reason. Aluminum FW use steel insert for friction surface and it is relatively tiny. The insert has problems with transferring heat into the FW itself and easily overheats from normal slip. This problem is not present in monoblock designs like TTV or even stock DMFW whose whole top part is a block of uniform metal...

Can you guys confirm these pics are both from a C5 A6? Is one style newer than the other? Which would you prefer? My interior is black (black seats, dark charcoal dash/console). Others may be available too.

Now I wish I went a different route! Although, I looked up the weight of the TTV and it translates to being lighter (or the same weight) as the LWFW JHM is using (from 034?). Did your combined AMD B7 RS4 clutch and TTV FW cost much north of $1K?

    Thanks guys,

The above black interior is facelift, the bottom is pre facelift. They're both C5 A6 and I personally prefer black and facelift.

A bit yeah. I think I'm in to clutch and flywheel 1200 or 1300.

As for the two cars you posted, definitely a6.

Not bad, but isn't the TTV one also considered lightweight at not more than 15lbs? I assume the advantage is that it's steel and one piece (but on the downside you can't swap out just the friction plate)? One of the other reasons I chose JHM is b/c I'll likely also purchase their short shifter in the near future.

Hah! I agree the aluminum trim polishes it off perfectly. Actually, that's one of the reasons I chose audis4parts over AA - they include the shift knob & boot.

That's what they tell you. But wait til'l you see what they send- if they eventually include it at all. The shift boot and knob they send will probably be this:
    OEM *chinese* SHIFT KNOB garbage

When I complained that it didn't seem quite honest compared to their website/ description they sent me a shift knob that looked like it came from the wreck of the Titanic. And, nope. they never sent me the shift console trim at all. And I wasn't offered any compensation. They just say "give us a call once in a while, hopefully we will get one in the next couple months". When I called; sure they had it, but it was already spoken for in a different swap kit.
Just sayin' keep an eye on them.

Did I mention I just bought a set of wheels from them just a week or so back?? I Paid and it took 11 days for them to ship them. Of course; I had empty tracking info within 3 days and they claimed they had shipped 3 different times. They actually shipped the wheels ONLY after I finally called and said cancel the order.

I made it clear to Phil that I was only interested in an OEM shift knob & boot. He said he'd provide that (he sent these pics) but I've just followed-up. Thanks again, Rollerton.
