    Rear Brakes and Rotors

Just got my car back from the stealership after having my gas tank replaced (4k later due to the lovely beltway in the DMV) was quoted $900 for rear rotors and pads. Measured 7mm for the front and 4mm on the rear. I still have plenty of surface remaining on the front I will forego the fronts for now and do the rears. This is my DD and extreme commuter what suggestions is recommended? I want performance but highly unlikely I will track the car. Just a spirited driver. Thinking about the ECS tuning wave rotors. Thanks for your input.

We recommend and use StopTechs Sport kits frequently on this platform. Slotted sport rotors and street performance pads have proven to work very well for us so we tend to recommend them.

Can be seen here on our website. If you have any questions shoot me a PM or an e-mail [email protected]

They're very likely scamming you. Check them yourself or at an indie shop. Stealer told me I was at 5mm, when I was really at 7. Front and rear are supposed to wear at the same rate, which is why there is only a sensor at the front... Replace both read and front when the sensor trips.

meh, my rears wore out faster than my fronts, YMMV.

check it yourself OP but very rarely are the dealerships trying to 'scam' customers. it's a horrible short-term focus. really, most dealers and service advisors I met with have done everything they could to help me out. Including loning me a car when I was severely under the age requirement, rides to work, upgrades to loner cars, and knocking off like 10% of a bill.

again, most places are there to make customers for life.

Its no mystery. They want you in for warranty work so that they can make money on routine maintenance as well. They are a business.

For weight reduction I recommend 2 piece rotors from ECS or similar.

right, which is what i am saying in my post. Scamming people and leaving them angry is a horrible long-term business strategy. Building a relationship, and occaisionally eating a few pennies will help create a customer for life, which will pay out much more in the future.

I have no issue paying a dealership service premium, for one, in my area, you are not saving a ton of cash by going indy, two, the dealership I go to treats me very well, and three, there is something to be said when you present the entire car's service history from a dealership vs joe's VAG shop when selling your car.

Sounds good in theory, and I agree with you. Perhaps you have a good dealer.

It seems as though the Audi dealer here, as well as NTB and Sears offer optional services for astronomical labor rates. Maybe because they are optional, it may not qualify as a scam.

The dealer has quoted me 70$ for a brake inspection, $160 for a VAG-COM scan, $300 for an "engine clean", $1500 for a brake change.

Now, these prices are high, but not unheard of. What irks me is that the vag scan takes 10 minutes, the engine clean is probably a spray of seafoam or equivalent, and the brake change was about a year premature.

I'm very weary of brake scams. I just witnessed Sears tell a girl with a Honda Civic that her caliper was seized and they can repair it for a low price of $260. She has 30k miles on her car: they are still under warranty (calipers aren't consumable), and a seized caliper repair is simply removing the pins and re-greasing them (on a Honda). Job should take no longer than 15 minutes for an experienced mechanic.

Here's an example article on brake scams:

Obviously experiences differ and anectodal evidence is not enough for correlation. However, dealerrater does support my observations...

im not saying there are bad shops out there, but a sear's can't warranty a honda, thats something that honda would have to do.

with anything, there are good places, and bad ones. you stay away from the bad ones, and you stay at the good ones. The good places as I mentioned, will step over pennies to earn dollars, and the bad ones will do the opposite.

$900? I'm up in Canada and my dealer quoted me $680 for the rear rotors and pads. I just had my fronts done for $740.

They wanted 2.5 hrs labor which came up $365 alone. Certain items I would recommend factory but not for brakes.

I'm leasing it and will never take it to a track so I really don't care. However, the price I'm getting for a OEM brake replacement from the dealer is cheaper or within a few dollars of any other alternative I've come across once you factor in labour.
