Sounds good in theory, and I agree with you. Perhaps you have a good dealer.
It seems as though the Audi dealer here, as well as NTB and Sears offer optional services for astronomical labor rates. Maybe because they are optional, it may not qualify as a scam.
The dealer has quoted me 70$ for a brake inspection, $160 for a VAG-COM scan, $300 for an "engine clean", $1500 for a brake change.
Now, these prices are high, but not unheard of. What irks me is that the vag scan takes 10 minutes, the engine clean is probably a spray of seafoam or equivalent, and the brake change was about a year premature.
I'm very weary of brake scams. I just witnessed Sears tell a girl with a Honda Civic that her caliper was seized and they can repair it for a low price of $260. She has 30k miles on her car: they are still under warranty (calipers aren't consumable), and a seized caliper repair is simply removing the pins and re-greasing them (on a Honda). Job should take no longer than 15 minutes for an experienced mechanic.
Here's an example article on brake scams:
Obviously experiences differ and anectodal evidence is not enough for correlation. However, dealerrater does support my observations...
