B8 S4 Engine seized. Now what?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yup so my engine seized at 106K miles on my 2011 S4 going down the highway yesterday. Never missed a service interval and oil changed every 5K miles. How could this happen?

Shop is still trying to get the engine to turn but no luck as of yet.

I just can't even think straight after hearing this...

Check engine light was on and had the appt made to take it in today. Car had been acting erratically and recently had the inner cooler inside the supercharger replaced and replaced the drivers side lower intake manifold. Behaved slightly better after getting it from the shop and thought the car was getting back to normal until I lost power at 70mph and had to coast off the highway.

Hmm, wonder if coolant got from the intercooler to the cylinder. I'm sorry it happened. Please let us know what happened as there arent a ton of these engines that are over 100K yet and it will be interesting to see if this was a freak occurrence/repair gone bad or will illuminate one of the earlier failure points we may see.

I'd look into used as well. car-parts.com has a 2011 with 30K miles on it for $5700 or with 64k miles on it for $3750.

The shop confirmed the engine is seized? It is at audi now or an indi shop?
First I've heard of a catastrophic failure on this platform like this... if it is 100% confirmed seized you will want to open a case with AoA - especially if the car was just recently being services at an Audi dealership.
Was the CEL flashing at you or just steady on?

Sorry to hear man - I hope it's not seized...

I am sorry to hear this. You'd be surprised at how incompetent some of the audi dealership service department is. If they were not being shady. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...light=brooklyn

Get a shot of a good bourbon, followed by a beer. Then, allocate some money to your engine fund. Get a used S4 engine, buy it, send it to a engine builder with all of the parts. Then, blue print the engine.

Or you can always just sell it as a part's car.

That's exactly what happened. Low coolant light never came on and car never overheated. Tech told me everything from my coolant was dumped into cylinder 6 (first time I took it in where they replaced the intercooler and intake manifold) and initially when I got the car back it would blow white smoke under a load but he told me more than likely it was residual coolant burning off and eventually it did go away a few days later so I thought nothing of it.

Indi shop has confirmed engine has as they tried starting it today with no luck and said that even trying to get it to start manually will be a three hour process. Scared of taking it to Audi because I know this bill is going to be astronomical.

To continue this whirlwind I've actually had a case open with Audi about my previous repair throwing me red flags and now I'm going to call them tomorrow with the updated news.

CEL was solid not flashing and never got a single warning light. Just the CEL.

Of the 5 engine failures I am aware of there is one of them that was posted on another site that had this same exact failure of coolant entering cylinder 6. The admin on that site hid the post I believe because the person was dealing with warranty issues but maybe post over on AR and see if the person will reach out.

I looked and I think it is one of the threads that was removed by the admin. The guy was tuned and getting it warrantied so the admin got rid of the thread. The site was a u d i revolution dot com . There's only 4 or 5 people on that site so if you reach out to one of them i'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

After you explained that there was a repair prior to this happening, logical repair had something to do with it, I would have car towed back to audi dealer who did repair.

This, How many miles have you put on the car since the repair. If its under 1000 miles I would be shakey about it. I would think that its related to the repair. But I would have the audi dealership check it out that did the previous repair. Now you could of bent that #6 rod with the previous problem and it just let go this time after the problem was fixed. This seems like a 3 hour job to figure out what the problem is. You remove the spark plugs if it won't turn over and see if any of the plugs are damaged. if they are that right there should tell you its an internal engine issue. Or they remove the lower oil pan and look for goodies lying in the pan.

Im guessing they changed your oil after the IC replacement repair??? Sounds like 50/50 that the dealer could be held liable. But I would get it to them to have them check it out first. Or just be careful with the indy shop and have them document everything to the T so if you have to take it back to the dealer you have 100% accurate proof.

Probably haven't even put 100/150 miles since repair.

To my knowledge oil change was not done but I'll have to verify that.

Was the original repair done under warranty? The damage was probably already done from the coolant dumping into the cylinder so you would have a claim there for it to be repaired properly.

If you've only put 100-150 miles on it since the repair, then you need to get the car back to the dealership that did the repair, because there's a *huge* potential that they caused the issue. You shouldn't even be going anywhere else, at that point.
