P2181 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System

So driving the car yesterday (2011 S4) and noticed the temp gauge wasn't coming all the way to half, only about 1/4 mark max. Drive a little further down the road and get CEL, pull over and do a scan with the VAG cable; P2181 comes up. Clear the code and drive her easy the rest of the way home, CEL hasn't come back yet.

I replaced the G62 temp sensor on the front of the engine coolant pipe about a year ago when the gauge would intermittently drop; fixed the gauge issue at the time. I'm probably gonna bite the bullet and just do the thermostat, waterpump, pvc etc. as the thermostat could be stuck partially open as well.

So searching through ALLDATAdiy, and it references a Engine Temperature Control Sensor (G694) as well as the G62 sensor. The G694 shows its location under the intake in the cylinder head. No part numbers or anything or any other info on alldata, other than removal procedure. I talked to local Audi dealer, and the only sensors they show is one on the cooland pipe on the back of the engine (I think it's the wrong diagram on their system), and then another diagram that does the front coolant pipe with the G62 sensor. That being said the G694 sensor cross references to that sensor on the rear of engine coolant pipe (which I don't think our engines have, unless I'm wrong). Also the sensors they show are all press in, and held with a clip. The sensor in the head would have to be a thread in.

    Thoughts?
