How much will it cost to fix these issues with this S4? (KNown Issues Listed Inside)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking at buying a 2000 S4. Before I buy it has some issues and I need to know what I am looking at to get all the the repairs done. It's a 6 speed with 160k miles on it.

    Here is the entire listing...

I bought this car in 2004 with 19k miles on it. It was rebuilt (branded title) from a front-end accident prior to my purchase. I've had no issues stemming from this rebuild that I know of during my 12-year ownership of the vehicle. The car was in a minor front-end accident in 2014 and the bumper, radiator, fan, and AC condenser were replaced then.

There is a dent in the passenger side rear door (visible in pics).

The car runs extremely strong. I had it chipped and added a "cat-back" exhaust to it (the sound is "throatier" but not loud) and the estimated horsepower is 330. It absolutely rips.

I've replaced suspension linkages to tighten up the handling and installed 4 new struts (shocks) last summer. It drives and handles like you would expect from an Audi S4 - it is a pleasure to drive and is unstoppable in the snow.

Comes with the Yakima rack and two of the bike trays - one upright, one fork-mount (I have another fork mount tray that I will include).

There is a after-market stereo with Infinity speakers, Kenwood deck, and Alpine amp - all work great. It comes with a bluetooth unit for connecting to phone audio.

The tires on it are blizzaks with about 7000 miles on them. Also included are another full set of almost new 4 season tires (I forget the brand).

    Known issues:
The check engine light is on. Also the ABS system is throwing a fault - the ABS system needs to be replaced (cost = $450). The brakes work fine - it is just the anti-lock braking that doesn't kick in. The left rear passenger window does not operate and the door latch does not work from the inside (works find from outside). There is a problem with the engine thermostat - the car is slower to warm up in cold weather but runs fine.

Rear rotors and pads are new in last 2000 miles. New shocks last summer. I've changed the oil religiously every 5-6000 miles using high-grade synthetic.

If you drive this car, you'll buy it - it is an absolute ripping car, super fun to drive. ]

Also if I were to buy the car t would have to make a 500 mile trip. Which isn't an issue for me as a driver, I'm just concerned if the car can make it or not. And let's pretend I didn't want to risk driving the car all that way's how much money would I be looking at to have it shipped to me and where can I find out more information on having the car shipped to me? Without going through ebay how would I pay for the car and get the title into my hands?

I will point out I am no expert on complicated ABS systems but... If its not snowy of icy I will pull out the fuse for the abs. I dont know how it affects the s4 compared to a GM car but I know that i drove 200 miles with absolutely no problems with no abs fuses in my 2002 s4.

as for the thermostat I can guarantee you that it is stuck open. Had the same problem with my chevy cobalt. The fans will kick in all the time and make it hard to warm up the car. But i drove more than a thousand miles with that car on a bad thermostat.

So I would say personally I am okay with driving that car myself. These issues are usually something that can be taken care of on your own time after you have the car.

I cant say 100% that having the bad thermostat is okay to drive with on the s4 because i have not personally done that on this car but I know its better to have a colder engine than a hot one so you can consider this but I would say that youre probably good to drive it.

Would also ad that if you didnt go through ebay just contact the seller and set up a time to meet and the make sure you have a well written Bill of sale and Get the title from the guy who has it. If he wants to sell it he will be quite willing to meet you!!

I saw that ad in the Boulder CO. Craigslist. Seller is probably a student at CU. price was very low, about 2500 or so if I'm remembering it correctly.

If the seller is a student, there could be additional neglected issues. Get a pre-purchase inspection. Apikol is in Boulder and outside of Berg (Denver) that's where I would go.

    Good luck.

I would agree. Get the inspection!

Also I might add that just because he is a college student doesnt mean he doesnt care for the car. Im a Sophomore in college and I keep my cars well maintained.
But... I do see really dumb kids who have nice cars and dont take care of them so Get the inspection!!

Ha! Not dissing on college students. But *some* who attend CU seem to prioritize beer, weed and pizza purchases over other expenses! Not that that's a bad thing. It just might mean that there's less left over for S4 parts.

Anyhow not seeing the ad on CL so maybe the car sold over the weekend.

got a rebuilt title when it was less than four years old. that must've been a hard/serious hit to do that on a car that young at the time.

This is true but it happened more than 12 years ago. If it has run good for 12 years now it must have been rebuilt with high quality.

Abs module could be repaired for cheap. Send it out to a company that rebuilds modules. Without abs the rear brakes will lock up on a dime with hard braking. Ask me how I know...

T stat requires timing belt to be pulled (or at least severely backed off) might as well do the timing if the t stat is bad. Usually signifies it hasn't been done in a while.

Latch could be as simple as it disconnecting inside the door card/not being put back together properly. Window could be the motor or the regulator. My bet is on the plastic clips on the regulator being broken. Easy enough fix, just have to pull the door apart. You can get the plastic clips for stupid cheap online too. so you don't have to buy a new regulator.

Doing the timing belt should be one of the first things the OP does anyway, at which time the t-stat can be taken care of at the same time. I never trust a PO when it comes to that, even if they have documentation of the t-belt being done.

I agree. Especially because you can get everything in OEM brand manufactured parts for around $200 shipped from ECS. With a cam lock bar it makes timing on these motors a no brainer.

Let me know if you want someone to go check the car out and scan it in person. I'm pretty close to boulder and have a stage 3 s4. That car on craigslist looks pretty clean, but no engine pictures
