    Oil Pan Replacement!!

    Hey guys,

    So i noticed little drops of oil in my garage when i moved my car. Got under the car and saw what appeared to be a hairline crack. I wiped the oil that was present and came back 10 minutes later to check it. Well sure enough there was a little bit of oil forming at the crack. Is there a DIY for replacing the oil pan on a 2005 B6 A4. Any info would help. Oh and yes i did look in the DIY section but didn't see anything.

    It's not that bad a job. Had to do my pan pull to replace my oil p/u a month or so ago but it was w/ the engine out.

    Have you considered a weld bead? or maybe a JB Weld repair, Quick Steel? I know those are not real repairs like the pan replacement but would save you some labor if you were to pull it off successfully.

    I'm just thinking out loud feel free to flame on.

    Nothing to loose with a quick sand (to give a tooth to the epoxy) and then application of some JB weld...you have nothing to loose except the 5$ for the JB weld ;)

    Sand a few inches away from the crack and apply JB weld said few inches from the crack. I would suggest a putty stick version of JB weld as opposed to the traditional 2 part epoxy that mixes like pudding until it starts to harden.

    I agree with the above. For a hairline fracture, I would go the JB route. It really isn't worth the hassle for such a small leak. Or try a metal filler.

    Yea I saw a Jb Weld repair on YouTube. I think I'm going to go this route cause it's a very small hairline crack. So the sanding portion is for adhesion purposes correct. Which is best the 2 part epoxy or the putty stick version.

    I bet any of the name brand stuff would keep it sealed up fine. Most important is the prep that you do prior to applying the epoxy etc. Personally I have had good success w/ the quick steel in a single tube. Used it to repair damaged threads on the block of a Nissan p/u to seal up the water pump. That was like 5 years ago and still no issues to date.

    It is a cast aluminum pan. Any residual stresses in that pan coupled with heat cycling will cause that crack propagate. The jb weld may stop the leak for now however the crack will likely grow resulting in a massive leak when you least expect it. Just replace the pan... it is cheap in comparison to replacing your bottom end when that crack splits while at 60mph.

    Well, this makes sense.

    You also get to clean out your oil pick up tube while the pan is off ;)
