Codes Showing Both Cat Converters Faulty, Remove them?

    Hey guys,

So I'm about 6 months into my ownership of a 2005 A6, 3.2. Just yesterday I got the check engine light, and so took it to an Audi/VW specialty shop instead of the dealer for a scan. It showed only the two codes: P0420, P0430. Tech explained this means both cats are faulty. He quoted me on having them replaced with OEM cats, which was well over what I expected. He cleared the codes using the VAG Com and a program on a laptop. The light is off, and I've driven it about 40 miles since and still no light. So here's my question: I live in a county here in NM that does not require emissions testing for registration renewal. What if I had the cats removed altogether? Would this trigger any problems? Would I need to buy special O2 sensors to keep the ECU from triggering a check engine light? Please share any thoughts or recommendations on my issue here.

    Thanks in advance.

Instead of running no cats and having to deal with the check engine light from not having any, why not run a set of "High Flow" cats instead? Should be able to find them much less costly then OEM and, since you dont have emissions testing, there would be no registration issues.

I like the idea. Thanks. I've read that some people with high flow cats still throw the check engine light. Have you heard this too? Any thoughts on that?

I'm not sure of this would work on the C6 but on my old S4 I removed the cats and used a o2 sensor spacer for the rear o2 sensors and drove it 2 years with no codes

HFC's with spacers and you should be fine. One of the best mods I did on my old B5 Avant.
