    Question Need Help Cracked Head

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just bought a 2004 A4 Quattro 1.8t was told is had a blowing head gasket well after removing the head and having a machine shop look at it turns out it cracked in 4 spots. It's the AMB stamped head and have learned that these heads are known for cracking does anyone know of a good reman head shop I can go though for a replacement head. I have found a few machine shops that sell remanufactured heads but don't want to buy something that will need to be pulled back off a few miles down the road

thanks in advance for any help

Your best bet is finding a reman. For an original non-cracked head it will be $$$$$. You could try your luck with the junkyard but chances are the machine shop will tell you there's cracks in that one as well. I picked up a reman from Rams Cylinder Heads and it's been running great for the last 2 years(knock on wood). I think you'll end up re-using your cams. This is what I got.

Buy a used head in good shape and rebuild it. Machine shops will sell you an unstamped Chinese casting and swap your parts over to it.

While you're at it, I'd do valve guides and seals at the least.

Like the above said buy a decent used one and rebuild. Shouldn't cost much to have head rebuilt. Havnt had to deal with audi heads yet but local machine shop rebuilt both heads on my small block v8 for $240. Valve guide, seals, 3 angle valve job, and resurface. There are places that repair cracked heads but I wouldn't trust it.

Is the AWM a more reliable and durable cylinder head? I had the AMB head replaced with an AWM head due to severely scored camshafts/bearings.

A friend I know has coolant in cylinder one probably due to a blown headgasket or the cracked head. Not sure yet until it's pulled apart.

I have a head off a good running AMB, and I can hook you up with a fully rebuilt AMB head. PM me if you need something. Your dollar is worth alot ore than mine, so I can help you out with good prices.
