RS5 Capristo loud in comfort mode? (FIXED)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello!

I had a couple of questions for you guys

I just bought a used resonated Capristo system (long story short, the guy had it for a year but he is returning his car to do dealer to get a GLE AMG, so I offered I'm to part out his Capristo system and he said yes).

First impression, sound great in dynamic! Only issue is that the 2013 RS5 closes the valve at low speed even in dynamic to reduce to drone, so I have to unplugged the valve system in the trunk to really get the full sound. Anyone knows if it's possible to always let the valves open in dynamic with Vagcom or something?

Like I said, sound is great, but I know that you can get a non-resonated version of the Capristo that sound more ''exotic''. So I was thinking maybe removing the center section and just get a shop to instal me two stainless steel pipe instead (from what I understand, that will give me exactly the same sound as the non-resonated version since I don't think there's any difference with the rear mufflers). BUT, my concern is that, even now, the system is pretty loud even in comfort mode! I read couple of posts saying that closed valves with the Capristo sounded like open valves with sport exhaust but to me it's much louder! And when I switch from close to open with the Capristo, it sounds basically the same to me (maybe a little variation but not much from inside the car, and I can see the valves closing and opening so they are not stuck in one position).
On the other hand, no drone at highway speed either with closed or opened valves.

So I am a little scared that, if I go with the mid-resonator delete, it will sound to loud in comfort mode. Also notice that when the valve are opened, the back section is a straight pipe. So that means that if I remove the resonator, the only thing that changes the sound is the stock downpipes, everything else is just an empty tube. Is that really the case with the non-resonated version?

Still happy with my purchase! I was just not expecting it to be as loud in comfort mode.

Here's some pics and I KNOW, the car is dirty as hell but it's still winter in Canada haha

I have the stock sport exhaust and my valves stay open in Dynamic mode (2013 RS5). Keep in mind that the powertrain is only in Dynamic mode if the transmission is in S, otherwise the powertrain is in Auto mode and then the valves are closed below 3800 rpm. If you use manual mode, make sure you put the transmission in S first, otherwise the powertrain stays in Auto mode.

    Haha happy I found it!
But the capristo is actually two pieces, so you can remove the resonator without cutting anything! Heard that you can get drone by changing the downpipes

I know that the system automaticly reverse to auto when you start the car, but when I unplugged the flaps from my stock exhaust, It sounded louder than the dynamic mode from lets say 2 000 to 3 500 rpm and especially when downshifting at low speed. I also saw in an another thread that sometimes the valves close even in dynamic (except for 2014+ RS5 because they the select the "engine sound" in the individual mode which keeps the flaps open)

Yeah, not sure what to tell you. Mine stay definitely open. If the transmission is in D the exhaust gets instantly louder at 3800 rpm and quieter below that. That's not the case if I'm in S. If I'm sitting idle in S and then switch to D, the exhaust also instantly gets quiet or if I switch to S from D it gets louder. Maybe unplugging the vacuum hose opens the valves a tad wider, I don't know, I never tried.

I'm just scared that it will sound super loud in comfort mode.
I don't know if it's just me but even with just the resonated capristo, it's loud with valves closed. And opening the valves doesn't make a big difference.

Was it the same with yours at the beggining? (with stock downpipes)

I think this video is from you as well, is that only the Capristo but the version without the resonator?

Sounds like you are just in default exhaust flap mode all the time. Even when you are in dynamic (or individual with dynamic for engine/trans) it will behave as comfort unless you cycle through the drive select after every startup.

On mine, I drive in dynamic all the time, but since I added my intake I'll often not cycle through and essentially leave the exhaust I comfort mode (which you are experiencing) to enjoy the smooth deep Intake sound more in the low revs.

Try cycling through the settings back to dynamic and the valves should stay permanently open - to me the capristo is at its best down low in the rev range - a mellow baritone with lazy driving 2-4K rpm - and you are very much missing out on this part of the capristo experience.

RS5 Capristo loud in comfort mode?

It's a long read but I wrote a pretty detailed review when I went from AWE to capristo. You're clearly missing my favourite part of the exhaust (valves open low revs).

Well, I just ordered a Capristo and based on Johnhanson's recommendation, will not delete the resonator. I'm looking forward to it and will post impressions once installed... It's a steep price to pay for sound (Canadians get hit with a brutal exchange, duties, etc.), but I wanted to give the car more presence and this is an easy way to do it.

and last vid with deleted mid-resonator.

i also have the original remote from Capristo to open/close the valves when i want.

I cycle through the drive select every time I start the car to make sure those flaps are open. It annoyed me at first... but I take my time before pulling away anyway...

as mentioned here, you definitely want those flaps open before rolling off, as that low-range, light throttle sound is delicious. I am still debating the center delete, but I'm so happy with sound as-is that I haven't made a move yet.

Yes I always cycle through the drive select to open the flaps! Love the sound at low revs!

But when i'm in close the flaps, I was expecting it to be quieter because to me, it sounds really close to open. I'm not really complaining about the noise, I was just surprise and wondering if other Capristo owner felt the same

Have you visually checked the flaps are closed? I thought there was a noticeable difference between open and closed.

Yes I've check the flaps and everything works fine!

I might try to do a video but I don't have a decent recorder, just my phone

The exhaust is about a year old, so maybe with time the closed valves gets louder?

I brought back the car to the guy who installed my exhaust and found out that the 4 bolts holding the downpipe and the Capristo together were gone! (Probably didn't tight them enough)
I was getting a pretty good leak, which explains the loudenest in comfort mode. NOW it's much more quiet with closed valves and sound like open valves with the sport exhaust (which is good!). Still has a nice rumble in dynamic and I can now hear a bigger difference between closed and opened.

Much happier with the sound now!! Thanks for the help guys
