    tip on dipstick broke

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i reed other post about it but it was mostly broken handles and the tunnel thingy
for me it is the tip on the dip stick
i was checking to see if i needed to fill her up and i notice that the tip broke off
i posted a pic of it
i hope its noticeable of where it broke off

after reading those threads my question wasn't really answered
    so my question is.

what happens to that piece that broke off? i know its somewhere in there
but can it cause some serious damage to the pump/valve/ etc... ?

i could empty the oil out and pray and hope that it comes out...
but i did recently change my oil last month...
i guess another oil change will be cheaper then what ever may arise from this little broken piece

    any suggestion??????????????????
    please and thank you

The piece is in the oil pan which is on the safe side of the oil filter. It may come out with an oil change. If not, it will just sit on the bottom of the pan. Treat yourself to a new dipstick:

what if i just break off the remaining plastic part and us it as is?
or do those plastic pieces play a big part or not?

I would replace the dipstick and not worry about the plastic piece remaining inside

Why are you being cheap with your S4?

It's $20-30. Buy a new one or get a cheaper car to maintain.

I don't think op is being cheap at all. He asked a question. How about instead of crucifying him for your assumption in judgement, you contribute some useful information. Save the crap for chatterbox.

More seriously though, mine is actually cracked there, just hasn't busted off. And I'm too cheap to spend $30 for a new one, so I guess I should sell my car and buy one cheaper to maintain??

With that attitude, why do anything DIY then or ask any questions online?!? Just take it to the dealer every time and pay out the ass, no biggie, who cares its just money anyway. Apparently, we must super flush with cash to own this car, and if not we have no business owning it and should probably just sell it so we don't ask stupid questions on our platform-specific forum.

Exactly man..... Don't understand all the hate from anyone. How can we enjoy this platform here at AZ when were constantly being flamed for any kind of question or wanting to learn. Seems alot of people automatically assume all the users are ASE certified Audi mechanics and if they aren't they should sell they're audis and buy a much cheaper idiot proof platform. Who are they to judge and say who can and cannot own this platform. This used to be a community for the greater audi good. Now it seems like it's a community for the less ignorant naive Audi good.

Ever since I bought my car, my dip stick has had neither of plastic pieces on it. Just bare metal and the handle. Who cares as long as it still shows the oil level?!? Just break off the broken part and you're fine

Wow, you guys sure do take things too far. No one said not to ask questions. No one said not to do it yourself and dealer only.

Look at it. It's brittle and more plastic is going to come off it.

But, come on, really? Your advice is to just break off the remaining plastic and put it back? There's no way all of the plastic comes off, if you try. More is going into the engine / oil pan. Why try to save it?. It's $25 to get a new one, ya cheapo.

It's not as if it's an exhaust and I'm saying to just replace it because it's got a rust spot and weld to fix isn't an option.

    It's $25!! That's not even a tank of gas....

Safe side of the oil filter? No, absolutely not. There is nothing "safe" about plastic chunks in the oil pan, or anything in the oil pan besides oil.

OP, I wouldn't worry about it too much because the pickup tube screen will stop it from getting sucked up by the oil pump. I'm not sure if the lower pan can be removed easily in your car, but I would look into that.

I think were just having some fun going both ways. Obviously people spend money on their car, well over $25, quite often.

    Original questions:
"what happens to that piece that broke off? i know its somewhere in there but can it cause some serious damage to the pump/valve/ etc... ?"

    Your response:
"Why are you being cheap with your S4? It's $20-30. Buy a new one or get a cheaper car to maintain."

You didn't answer the question and your wording can easily be be construed as condescending. He wasn't being cheap; he could have already ordered a new one for all we know. He was wondering about the piece that was already broken off!

I may not have answered the question of where it went... but my opinion meant what I said -- if one's way to repair something is to rig it to work rather than just replacing a relatively low cost part, you're being cheap. This isn't your grandma's Camry. Have some pride your S4 and keep it like new as best as you can.

I don't think removing the plastic tip of the dipstick counts as "rigging it to work". It's a dipstick. He's not driving around with torn control arm bushings, he's not driving around with half of his electronics inoperative due to a CAN-BUS issue, and he's not driving around like MANY S4 owners consuming a quart of oil in under 1,000 miles. Those people that are too cheap to buy a new PCV valve and would rather put oil in it every time they fill with gas, they are "rigging it", and should probably go buy a Honda before their Audi really breaks. The finger nail sized piece of plastic on the dipstick isn't worth talking about. If you hadn't seen it there already, and you pulled your dipstick, you wouldn't know it was supposed to be there.

but that plastic is a piece of quality german engineering, it prevents metal on metal contact inside the dipstick tube. This is why our dipstick tubes are so long lasting, best designed disptick tube ever

The piece will be inside the pan, or even at the screen of the pick up tube of the oil pump, few pieces of my dipstick went down the tube and when I removed the pan later in life they were all there. No harm done. Just get a new dipstick. No need to be alarmed.

i ended up breaking the rest of the plastic and used it
just wanted to feel how the dipstick glides in the tunnel
but i didn't like the friction that i felt when inserting the dipstick
...now i know why the plastic is there... haha
but yeah i'll be getting a new one

also " 2004B6S4 " did mention that it takes away the metal on metal contact
just waned to see for myself

Those people that are too cheap to buy a new PCV valve and would rather put oil in it every time they fill with gas, they are "rigging it", and should probably go buy a Honda before their Audi really breaks.
If only a PCV valve actually fixed the issue on all of those oil burners...

The cost of a new engine is something I'm still not sure if I want to deal with right now.

Not everyone who is burning oil like crazy just needs a new PCV valve. But not everyone who is burning oil like crazy has a scored motor. Most people just don't check which one they have before bending over in front of a mechanic. That's all I'm saying.

Same thing happened to me but it was the very bottom part of the dipstick it broke off while I was checking the oil unfortunately it happened right after I did an oil change so my fix was I took the oil pan off found the broken piece took it out so it wouldn't get sucked up against the filter on the oil pump causing less oil to be given too motor. And spent another almost $70 on mobile 1 5w30 and I always put a qt. Of Lucas oil stabilizer with every change and then got a new dip stick feeling like a dip stick.
Good luck. Hope all "pans" out well pun intended
