Advice wanted. Akebono pad replacement withOUT new rotors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Title says it all. I have 25k on my AR with stock pads. Pads actually look pretty thick still, like new-thick. I am finally fed up with the dust and want to swap in Akebonos on the fronts for now, probably backs later after I do some unscientific testing on the dust difference. Question is, is there any issue not changing out the rotors at the same time? If my pads were worn low, I would change the rotors too, but apparently I drive very gingerly most of the time - due to shitty city roads. I've changed out pads before without rotors on other cars, usually changing the rotors every 2 times I change the pads. Rotors also feel fine to the touch, no uneven wear, no significant lip. Any issue with my case since miles are low and current pads looks pretty full? Anyone done this? It's not real clear in the brake discussions I've searched through.

I did exactly this and have zero problems. Same situation, rotors were in fine condition, shop did not recommend a replacement, so I didn't bother. Went from stock pads to Akebono. You'll be happy you did, that dust was outrageous.

I've changed pads only many times on various cars over the years with no problems.

Thanks guys. I was just confirming no issues specific to the stock pads, rotors, or system with this car. Will order the akebonos asap.

I have a near-new (see pics) of Akebono ($50 + shipping) and used Carbotech track pads for sale. See classified:

If your rotors are completely flat (rare), then sure. Otherwise have them machined to smooth them out. This way you maximize surface contact area.

I switched to Akebono pads (along with new rotors) and I love how my rims stay clean!

Most people will tell you that you will need to at least resurface the rotors when installing new pads so it will bed correctly. I have done it both ways and I think as long as the rotors dont have a lip on them, you should be fine. If you can feel a lip on the outer edge, I would have them resurfaced.

I did exactly this as well, Akebono pads and all. The dust difference was shockingly dramatic! You will be very happy with the results!

Pads already on their way. Can't wait for clean wheels lasting more than 2 days. No doubt that rears will be changed soon as well. I'm pretty sure I know the results of my experiment already.
