HRE wheel resale prices - thinking about selling

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Apparently my HRE wheels were clear coated with a batch of clear coat that was not to spec and created a little bit of pitting around the center caps. Let me clarify that the clear coat pitted, not the forged aluminum. HRE, being the stand up company that they are, are refinishing the wheels for me at no cost under warranty. My dealer Wheels Boutique has also been very helpful being the liaison between myself and HRE.

So essentially I'm getting brand new wheels back from them when they are done. They didn't have any curb rash on them as I've meticulously cared for them, but now the finish will be new as well.

This brings me to a cross roads. What do I do? I'm thinking about keeping them, but I'm also thinking about perhaps selling the car (an itch I get every 6 months or so, but never follow through with it). My questions is, what are HRE wheels going for on the resale market? This is a special resale case because they are coming back new from the factory. They are HRE P47SC forged aluminum monoblock in 21" x 9.5". The rears are cut with more concave then the fronts to give the car the staggered wheel look despite being square all the way around for quattro performance and warranty issues. They currently have a brand new set of Hankook 275/30/21 tires just installed a month ago which fill the rim better then the 265 Michelin PSS which had a bit of stretch. Not sure if I'll keep the tires or sell as a set. Please help a confused individual with how much these could sell for.

I have some time to think about it as the wheels take about a month of travel and refinish time before I have them back. See pics below:

Used wheels are used wheels. I imagine if you knock them down by $1-2k you might get someone to bite, but that person would have to want that specific set of wheels or be willing to pay a little less than full price for a set of wheels that might not be exactly spec'd the way they would have ordered them from HRE. Someone here recently sold a set of HRE wheels for something like $5k and they sold quickly, so I would guess $5-6k is probably a realistic price.

    ^ This.

Its the reason pre-owned items, even if like new, are usually 50-60% off retail price on the 2nd hand market. It has to be a reasonable 'deal' because the buyer usually isn't getting the exact item they'd buy if buying new. Plus the buyer takes a risk buying from an individual with no liability and no return policy. Also, for high end items, the market is even tougher because used price points are high enough to deter casual wheel buyers and those with the funds for high end wheels probably don't mind spending a little more to get exactly what they want.

I don't what those wheels list for, but I would say for a used set that is almost new in appearance, you can get 50% of HRE retail. I just recently sold my brushed tinted P101 that had less than 5k miles on them for $5k plus shipping. List like 10600. They looked almost new. I could have probably gotten a little more if I would have held out longer, but you know what they say about a bird in the hand!

A person who buys a used set doesn't' know if you hit a pothole with them and they are bent even if they have only 500 miles on them. They are taking a chance to get a set for a good price.

If they are refurbished by HRE and not put back on the car, you should be able to get 60% of retail if you can find the guy that wants that style wheel for an S6. HRE will not refinish and send back if they are bent, so they will be guaranteed good, a plus for a buyer.

The problem with getting the staggered concavity is that they are not rotatable and that also limits the market somewhat, to S6 owners only, as the only reason you did that was because of the front brakes. You would have gotten them all concave if you could have.

Unless someone with another type of car wants to compromise and take them only because they are a great deal. To get that person to bite, the price will have to be lower.

eBay fees are now 10%. Plus PayPal fees, selling a set of expensive wheels on eBay is cost prohibitive. You can list them a lot cheaper here and end up with the same money.

    IMO, YMMV yada yada....

ive paid as high as 16k for wheels, have gotten back about 5k-6k. wheels are the worse to get any type of return on. especially because peoples opinions differ and they may not be as enthusiastic about your used wheels as you were your new wheels. believe it or not, i have a better return on cheap wheels when it comes time to selling. I can see you getting 4k for this set. (im up to my 6th set in a year and a half for my R8, yes i have a problem :) )

Thanks for the responses guys. Pretty much what I expected in the $5k neighborhood.

If I keep the car it makes no sense not to use them for however long I keep it. If I sell the car (which I probably won't) I'd sell them and try to get around $5k. Appreciated.

I'm firesaleing two sets of HRE's in the classifieds and haven't had any serious bites even at my crazy low prices. Again it all comes down to who want's that particular style wheel, apparently my wheels must be horrible.

Selling wheels is rough. No one wanted my ADVs until I already shipped them back to wheels boutique for credit and then I had like 6 serious buyers at once. Go figure.

    This👆

Exactly the reason why I stay under 2k a set. I change wheels very often and find the resell value much better than when I try selling my 10k wheels which went out of fashion and I practically gave them away.
