On my MK6 Golf R I was very happy with an aftermarket down pipe mated to the stock catback. I hated the stock tips. I had Magnaflow tips welded on that car. This S3 gives me the same impression. I drove an S3 that has a Unitronic DP mated to stock catback and it sounds delicious.
I am also not happy with how any of the aftermarket cat backs sound, or their prices.
I measured the stock exhaust and a few other measurements and settled on the Magnaflow 35123 tips. they are 7.5 inches long, 3.5 inch diameter dual wall stainless with a 2.25 inch inlet which is nearly perfect on the stock pipes where they are round. I ordered 4 and sanded off the laser etched Magnaflow logo and polished them up. Stock tips are 3.5 inch chrome and are oval, the outlet pipes from the muffler are round and 2.25 inch or close probably metric but are then stretched and ovaled to accept the tips. Stock tips are just pressure fit onto those pipes.
Had my welding buddy help me this morning to chop off the stock tips and mount these. I could not be happier with the fit and look. Next up is a down pipe to get the added sound and power I want.
