I thought I would pull the HPFP off to see nothing but carnage. Not the case... I'm 2nd owner since 60k miles. Never changed it until today. The job itself wasn't actually that bad. Everyone makes that banjo bolt out to be the devil, but with the right extension, it isn't bad. Not sure about the piston head on the HPFP though? Does that look OK? Maybe time for an upgrade kit to replace that?

If I was to guess based on the condition of the tip of that HPFP the cam follower wore through on the previous owner and he just tossed another follower in. Your may want to spin the engine and check the three highs on the cam not just the one low.

Or it maybe that your follower is not spinning like it is supposed to which is why you have the drag marks on the sides of the two holes across from each other and same thing you will want to check the cam highs.

Confused by "check the cam highs"? Forgive me but I have not the slightest what you are referring to there!

Cams by definition are not circular, they have relative lobes, high, low, high, low etc to activate the HPFP piston. The photo is a low point on the cam lobe, if you turn the engine over manually it will show you higher spots where the wear might be more significant.

It's hard to tell how much wear is on the follower because the pictures are so bad, the lighting that is. It looks like it's about to fail though by the looks of that V-shaped crack on the top surface. You are either very lucky or the first owner, if not you, did change it and the present owner is unaware of it. The top of the HPFP piston looks OK though so I don't think there was ever a wear through on this particular pump.
The pump cam has three lobes on it. [B]Martin0079[/B is suggesting that you check all three lobes, not just the one you show in the photo. You may have done this and the photo is representative of the other two lobes.

I monitored mine @ 10k mile intervals since I bought the car with 60k. I changed mine out @ 103k a couple weeks ago simply for peace of mind and it looks drastically better than this. Mild scoring, but no cupping at all. I'm still dumbfounded by it. I have the entire service history before I bought the vehicle and the fuel pump was never touched on it. I'll post a pic of it when i get home this evening.

Yeah I had no clue about the "high" and "low" cam lobes... And I thought mine looked good. But apparently it was just OK. I don't think I'll own her long enough to change it again.

The lobe is really a triangle shape with rounded corners. Those corners and flats are the "highs" and "lows."

It's just getting to be one of those "what's next sort of things when it comes to repairs". I keep thinking that there's not much left to go wrong but the engine. But I keep being proven wrong.
