Gear indicator on the dash

I am new to the brand and I have not been able to find the answer in the manual. I have noticed on several youbube videos that the dash shows S1-S2-S3 and so on.
Mine shows only "S" when in automatic mode and M1-M2-M3... once in manual mode. Is there a way to display the gear the car is in when in Automatic? When In manual, should I see S1-S2.. and so on? I have tried to switch from "S" auto to manual and always shows "M". It would be great if we could have the greats displayed in large font too.

EasyPeasy, This is done via VAGCOM. Try and find someone in your area that has the cable and software

I was looking at Amazon for a VAGCOM kit. I see a few for around $20.00, cable and CD.
Is this what I need to enable some of the functions that I keep reading about on this forum?

This is what you need and don't be fooled by cheaper brands. But you might want to find someone in your area that has one and is willing to code it in for a few bucks. Everyone is always willing to help a fellow member

when you find someone that can code this for you, make sure you have a shopping list ready of other mods you would like, such as:
- DRL always at 100%
- DRL stays on when signalling
- rear lights on in daytime
- no seatbelt chime
- turn off amber side markers
- activate open/close windows with key fob
- etc etc.

there's a topic on the forum here with all the mods, including coding (sorry, too lazy to look ;) )

They don't, although the changes might get overwritten (reset) during some service work. I haven't had it happen, but I know it's been mentioned.

Another option is an app on your phone along with a blutooth adapter. Check out carista.com

I've never heard of this Carista App. Unfortunately their samples list of features you can modify isn't listing correctly on the website. Do any of you happen to have a list of things you can change with this app and adapter?

Unfortunately it seems they have every Toyota listed except for the Tacoma. I could have used that as a selling point so my wife doesn't bitch about me buying something like this!

(I'm interested in setting my fogs as turning lamps, increasing my DRL power during the day, and possibly leaning out a code from my reverse LEDs that were supposedly CANBUS error free.)

couple things missing from that list.. but the first post if you start from the last post and go backwards.. you will see the new stuff.. stuff like release rear parking brake for doing rear brake jobs.. oil and lap timer and gear indicator

I just purchased carista and it seems to work with a few items but not all that I tried. The long press to open windows doesn't seem to work for me but the closing does (this one might have been there all along, I just never tried it) I will keep you posted of my findings. After you enable it on Carista you have to go into the MMI and then turn it on

In case you have someone with VAGCOM .. here's how to do it.

Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu

looks like he is in Spain .. i think it's a US thing to switch the DRL's off due to the law on how many lights you can have on.. maybe his is on by default and he has to do the reverse
