Paint or Dip? | Cheapskate Repairing Curb Rash - B7 Split 5's

    Hi Folks!

Bit of a preface: This car was an immature impulse-buy years back (I love the B7, but FWD with an S-Line package shows the amount I knew about the Audi world prior to entering it). That said, I all but refuse to pay a shop to do anything I think I can do on my own (which has it's own pros and cons ). The most recent oil change yielded a bit more glitter in the pan than I'm comfortable with, and at 123,xxx miles on the clock with a CVT transmission, I think it's time to get out while I still can.

Which brings me to repairing odds and ends to get a decent value out of the car. Over the years, the wife has done a number on the wheels, in terms of rash/gouges (I'll own up to two instances myself). I'm not going to take these dogs to a shop and I'm not going to spend a few hundred on stock replacements, when I feel like I can repair them for <$150 USD.

I've got all of my repair materials, and I'm turning to the fantastic folks at Audizine to help me determine the direction with the finish. Here's how they currently stand:

    OPTION A (my original plan):
After filling and sanding the imperfections, I was going to throw a base of flat gray Plasti Dip over the entire front face of the wheels, followed by the Bright Aluminum Metalizer. I feel like this finish is the closest stock color-match in the Dip world.

    OPTION B:
All of them have pretty bad rash near the bead, with the second wheel being the ugly duckling, but I don't need them to be perfect. Do I save my self the trouble of fully prepping the entire wheel (OPTION A), and just purchase a true color-matched paint? This would save time, effort and maybe a little cash, but I does leave me with some pretty poor looking center caps as well (where as the option above would allow me to respray my caps with the same color).

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

FWIW, I jut said eff it and banged two of the worst wheels out, yesterday. Here are the results for the worst of the four (NOTE: final color, Bright Aluminum Metalizer, is getting shipped in at the end of this week):

A couple of minor imperfections, but leaps and bounds better than it's previous state. I'm excited to get the Bright Aluminum on there this weekend & pumped about the outcome thus far (it's my first time playing with Bondo and Plasti Dip).

    Progress update:

I was able to complete five base coats on all four wheels, along with wet sanding and dipping my current center caps (my neighbor stole my originals--story for another day). Final color/Metalizer coat should be complete next weekend.

Center caps that my thief of a neighbor so kindly exchanged out for my originals:

Happy to finally have a set of decent-looking wheels back on the car:
