2000 mile road trip with the S4

I've been wanting to do a road trip in the '12 S4 and got a chance to do one to FL and back. This car is much less fatiguing than my previous cars. Main reasons: The S4 requires very little steering correction on the highway and high speed passing was effortless. It's fun when merging back on from the rest stops to give it max throttle in 3rd and slot right in. Man, this car never runs out of breath. I have the 6MT and rarely had to downshift to pass. Road noise was good except for concrete highway surfaces. Comfort was ok; some muscle strain between the shoulders, but I think it was from keeping my arms out on the steering wheel for 9 hours at a time. The XM satellite traffic saved me by re-routing around jams 3 times. The Waze app will probably work as well, but I like the integration of the car GPS better. 26.4 MPG, 95% highway. I saw very few Audis down south. Maybe no dealers?

Some drivers make me scratch my head. If you're going to pass, give it some gas; don't cruise along side by side with another driver blocking the left lane. Get it over with. No offense to the sunshine state, but Florida drivers were the worst. I saw a high speed rear end collision, had a motorcycle pass me so fast it was just a green streak going by and witnessed a driver almost take out a railroad crossing gate trying to beat the train.

It's bike week season in Florida so they are everywhere and the snowbirds are still there causing accidents and traffic jams. Florida is a slow state to begin with. I swear the sun cooks the brains to no end down there.

OH, is that why? I saw lots of cycles and especially Harleys down there. But the guy who passed me must have been doing 150 on a dark 2 lane road. I don't give him 6 months.

sometimes i think we need tougher driving restrictions in general, i see things almost daily that are downright unacceptable, and its not ok!

Lived in Miami my whole life. Florida drivers are bad, but Miami has the worst of them all lol. Done a couple road trips (only about 300-500 miles) in the s4 and it was pretty good. Definitely comfortable car to do decent length trips in.

I can't wait to go on a road trip with mine, just a little worried now that it's lowered.

I drove from Milwaukee to San Francisco and then from San Francisco to Vancouver. I love road trips and actually made a thread for the Milwaukee to SF drive. I noticed the seats weren't that comfortable over time although great for the daily driving commute. I actually never got 100% comfortable in the seats of the S4 throughout my ownership. Also the gas tank is a little small for long trips.

Agree on the seats for long drives. That may be the tradeoff for rigid sport seating vs squishy seats. The A6 with automatic may be a better highway cruiser, but not nearly as fun.

The car will make a road trip special. Took the S4 to Taos, NM for a spring break ski trip and got back today, second year in a row for this car.

OP: Glad you had a good experience on the road trip. I haven't done anything that daunting in my car yet. I did buy the car in Austin, drove to San Antonio that night for a Spurs game (against the Knicks.....slaughter) and then to Houston the next day to come home. It was exactly how you said it was. I am looking forward to taking her to Arkansas. The wife and I are interested in checking out the Crater of Diamonds state park. Hopefully I can find an anniversary present! haha

If you want to see some wild driving, I have worked in Baku, Azerbaijan for the last 2 years....now THERE are some wild drivers. There is no such thing as a traffic law the way some people drive. If you can squeeze it in, they will squeeze it in. haha....But no one had road rage and strangers on the street were happy to help any and everyone who may be trying to park or leave a space / be safe getting around another car. It was a wild experience.

The Yellowstone trip was a euro trip, and there was 30 cars that did the runs for five days through the park it was a blast. The only problem I had was my sister couldn't stay of the sauce long enough to enjoy the trip.

If you have the Adaptive Cruise Control, it is even a better drive. I travel from Long Island to Florida at least once a year, sometimes twice. I actually look forward to the drive.

I drove from San Antonio to Philly, back to San Antonio a few years back. It was quite comfortable, I have a DSG so I propped my left leg up on the door with a pillow in between. Extended the under leg supports fully sit back and cruised.San Antonio to Nashville, Nashville to Philly, was not bad at all. I've made that trip in different cars/moving trucks and the S4 was by far the most comfy.

In the S4 I have done a trip to Austin TX from Northern NJ via Houston First on the way out, and H20 in MD on the way back a Total of 4500 miles. Seats seemed fine for me. We currently also have an A7 which I just did the FL and back drive. Compared to most NJ/NY drivers FL drivers are good. March is prime season in FL so more people and lots of bikes.

I absolutely hate it when people take 2-5 minutes to pass a car or two by going 0.2-1.5 miles an hour faster than the person in the right lane. I'll flash and honk all day just give it some gas and get around. Shit. General Driver etiquette is horrible.

Drive my new S4 home to NY from Spartanburg SC. 12 hours and 700 miles. Overall a nice ride. The seat started to affect my back after 10 hours or so. But I didn't really complain.
