    Stage 1+ Tuning Questions/Recommendations

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just got my 2016 S3 and I had some questions about tuning.

I want the ability to download the tunes myself and notice two companies who have solutions that let the end user do their own flashing, Eurodyne and Unitronic

Looks like the Eurodyne is cheaper.

    Questions:

    1) Do both work with 2016 models as I hear 2016 has a locked ECU?
    2) How many miles on engine should I wait before flashing ECU?
    3) Can either products switch between tunes on the fly. Say from a Stage 1+ 91 to 93 octane tune?
    4) I read a lot about cars getting TD1 Flags as the dealer can scan your system to see if ECU/DSG has been modified. Can anyone confirm if either solution can make a perfect backup of your original ECU/DSG state prior upgrading? Can the dealer tell?
    5) Can each solution reset flash counter? Does it tell you what your ECU flash counter is at before flashing?
    6) Is a DSG flash necessary when upgrading your ECU to a stage1? I read some people with APR DSG tunes had issues with their transmission fluid cooking due to excessive transmission temps.
    7) Can ED and Uni have the ability yo clear car error codes?
    8) Aside from price is their any preference ED vs Unitroinc? Can car compensate if you get lower octane then what is required? (Put 93 Octane in but gas only has 91 (bad batch)?

I have Eurodyne. One of the best flash solutions from home. Free upgrades from different stages for the same price. Vendor claims to reset flash counter, but I didn't confirm. Eurodyne is best bang for your buck. Check my build thread and YouTube channel for some pulls.

    1) Do both work with 2016 models as I hear 2016 has a locked ECU?
unitronic hasn't announced anything officially at this time. but I would say it's not too far off.

    2) How many miles on engine should I wait before flashing ECU?
I waited 1,000 miles myself. I made sure that in the last week, leading up to tuning it, I really got on the car hard. Did a good inspection on the car, changed the oil. Then went stage 1+ UNI.

    3) Can either products switch between tunes on the fly. Say from a Stage 1+ 91 to 93 octane tune?
Not sure, as I only have 93 files on my uniconnect. I would guess so, but wait for a UNI employee to comment.

    4) I read a lot about cars getting TD1 Flags as the dealer can scan your system to see if ECU/DSG has been modified. Can anyone confirm if either solution can make a perfect backup of your original ECU/DSG state prior upgrading? Can the dealer tell?
    still a gray area.
for me, these two options that you're considering are probably the safest route. I've always had tunes, and prefer the real deal.

    5) Can each solution reset flash counter? Does it tell you what your ECU flash counter is at before flashing?
no experience with flash counting, sorry.

    6) Is a DSG flash necessary when upgrading your ECU to a stage1? I read some people with APR DSG tunes had issues with their transmission fluid cooking due to excessive transmission temps.
I had stage 1+ without DSG tune. Then I had stage 2 without it. stage 1+ was not too bad with it, but I usually used M mode, b/c I HATE the oem shift point in S mode for 2nd gear.
getting the UNI DSG tune, fixed the OEM shift points and obviously more.

    7) Can ED and Uni have the ability yo clear car error codes?
Uniconnect does have the ability to show you codes, and clear codes on the ecu and tcu.

    8) Aside from price is their any preference ED vs Unitroinc? Can car compensate if you get lower octane then what is required? (Put 93 Octane in but gas only has 91 (bad batch)?
no experience with 91, you're in ny and worried about fuel?

Cheers and good luck with the car!

With all the added extra torque on the Stage 2 from Eurodyne.. I would think a DSG tune is necessary.
There has been reports of slippage with less than 100 ft/lbs..
I have not heard or seen anything about the DSG tune from Eurodyne though.

No issues with slip on ED stage 2. Though I never launched it. This is with the nanny controls in place.

I think I'm noticing some slipping in the 6th gear with low rpms (~2K) and full throttle, which your car will only do in manual mode, and I should have down shifted anyways, but was being a bit lazy.

Its a little weird, and I'm guessing since APR's DSG tune will apply more clutch pressure when it slips, it stops slipping, then when the clutch pressure is put back to normal, it slips again, and the tune again applies more clutch pressure to stop the slipping, and this cycle repeats while your requesting a ton of torque in 6th gear at low rpms (not really a good idea even when not tuned).

I'm considering APR's upcoming DSG clutch packs. I'm feeling like the stock clutches are not up to the job long term, but maybe if I'm more careful and don't do dumb things, they will last.

I don't notice any slipping with launch control and the lower gears are just fine at WOT + low rpms.

I can get my Stage 2 + DSG A3 to slip in 4th and 5th primarily, sometimes in 6th. Manual mode will of course result in high torque slip, but I can sometimes see in in D also. Looking forward to it remedied with the 2.0.1 TCU revision with increased clamping pressure.
