Dyno Session Today (APR Stage 1 3.0T)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Decided to have a fun dyno session over at EPLabs via Excelerate Performance for s & giggles.

    Run 1: 360.414 HP / 328.191 ft-lbs
    Run 2: 363.399 HP / 327.582 ft-lbs
    Run 3: 366.111 HP / 330.340 ft-lbs

    Performance mods:
APR Stage 1 ECU Flash (Latest version as of July '15) 93 octane
    Roc-Euro Intake
AWE Tuning Touring Exhaust (w/ stock dp)

Tony said it put up strong numbers compared to the dynos he's done on cars on the same platform, so I'm pretty happy with the numbers.

Thanks. 35% on sides and 20% in the rear. Kept it at the legal limit for CT. It can look pretty dark when the sun isn't hitting it.

Car looks great, and nice numbers for sure. Glad to see the dyno at EPL is set up and already getting some use. Now you have a good baseline run for when you go stage two!

Thanks! Yeah it sounds like the dyno is getting a lot of use over there, especially with development of the EPL tunes. I have to say the EPL tune looks mighty impressive figure-wise, I might have to get their stage 2 over APR if a deal can be had. Not that I'm unhappy with the APR tune.

Finally received an updated chart with some figures. Updated the dyno chart photo at the top of the thread.

    Best run: 366.111 HP / 330.340 ft-lbs

Thanks to Excelerate for getting me this new chart from EPL. Greg, sorry about all the emails, and for those threatening notes I left on your car. I agree, I went a little overboard.

were you able to log the runs? Curious what the APR software targets in the mid-range in terms of boost request.

I don't have any other data other than that chart, sorry. I came out with that chart, some video footage, and Tony showed me a comparison of my run versus a similar modded vehicle running his EPL Stage 1 tune. He also discussed some other dynos of tunes he had done recently which was fun to hear about.

Agree, the EPL tunes look really nice (was planning APR myself originally). Also, want to see where EPL might go with a possible dual pulley set up. Sure is nice to have such good talent local to us. EPL and Excelerate at same location is awesome. Thanks for posting dyno and info.

I rarely see dyno plots on this 5 forum, and even more rarely see dyno posts go 13 replies without a decline into the usual mess.
Thanks for the plots and pics, looks great, I had APR a couple of times in the past and was happy too.

Added a youtube video to the original post. Nothing too exciting, it's really just for my own records.

It's definitely great having both powerhouses so close by. If they'd only start serving alcohol over there I'd be there all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love my APR tune, and I will probably stick with them, as I don't think I'd ever go with anything beyond stage 2. With that said, after talking with Tony I'm very impressed with how he handles himself in regards to his company. You can tell that guy sweats passion for his tunes. But had I gotten in on that recent group buy it probably would have been different. I could've gotten EPL stage 2 (with pulley installed) for less than I paid for APR stage 1. Oh well...

I don't think I'll be making their April event, it looks like I'll be heading out of state the day before. But you'll have to tell me how it is. Sounds like they have a 700 HP RS4 lined up for one of the event dyno sessions.

Ha, it's probably because stage 1 is old and boring news at this point. What with the 3.0Ts getting e85 and dual pulley tunes, and the 2.0Ts getting stage 3. But I appreciate the positive feedback! I had fun with this dyno session, especially combined with the opportunity to check out EPL's new facility.

I was just looking over my old post's information... shouldn't the dyno run have measured to redline? It looks like it cuts at 6700 rpm, while apr's website shows the tune making power up to 7200 rpm. Is there a valid reason the dyno handler might cut it off early? Or maybe there's something wrong with the tune?

I thought this when I watched the video, he seems to come off the pedal before the car has reached its peak but saying that the torque curve is starting to fall off so the HP = Torque x RPM divided by 5252 numbers probably won't increase much more so no point in pushing it just to get an extra 2HP.

You're right, the extra horsepower wouldn't be much at all. I'm more curious as to why it was like that. I'm waiting on a response from the dyno service to see what they have to say about it.

Love Dyno posts! Good looking numbers, and even if they were not of your liking (which doesn't seem to be the case), to me it's all about the fun of watching and hearing the car scream in front of your eyes while on the rollers!

So this is purely b/c I am uninformed on Dyno's but from what I've seen on APR's website shouldn't the HP be more in the 400's? On APR's site I'm looking at the "STG 1 93 CHP" showing 444hp (Stock 333hp). There's also the "STG 1 93 AWHP" showing 368whp (Stock 285whp). Which chart should I be looking at and what do each of those mean?

Basically you have crank figures versus at-the-wheels figures. The former refers to power right at the crank of the engine, which does not reflect drivetrain losses; the latter refers to the power that the car actually puts to the ground, which takes into account drivetrain losses. Rear wheel drive and front wheel drive cars can lose around 15-18% of the power once drivetrain is taken into consideration. All wheel drive platforms can lose around 22%.

So even though I have not looked at the website, my guess is that their numbers are advertised at the crank, and the numbers seen here (Dyno numbers) are at the wheels.

Thanks. Yes, I am very happy with the numbers and am glad EPL moved in down the road. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing some more sessions after adding some more upgrades.

I have a feeling they recently updated that AWHP number chart, but not the CHP. Anyways, so CHP or crank horsepower is the power the engine makes before drivetrain loss. This CHP is usually a calculation using the WHP or wheel horsepower figure received from the dyno run, unless you are using an engine dyno. The rule of thumb I think is AWD = 20% power loss, RWD = 15%, FWD = 10%, though this varies. So assuming a 20% loss my CHP would be around 458 (366.111 divided by .8).

Another factor is that APR uses a Dynapack type dyno which reads significantly higher than the mustang type I used. I have a feeling I would put down bigger numbers than what they advertise using a dynapack dyno.

Awesome, yea I'm definitely going to do Stage 1 but I'm waiting for my warranty to expire first...I'm at 30k miles already (Purchased new Feb '15). I've already upgraded my intake to ECS's.

I had 200 miles on my car when I flashed to stage 1. I just couldn't wait, it's definitely how the car should come from the factory. I'm itching to go stage 2 now, a year later. That's great to hear you're planning on a tune, you'll love it. Good luck!
