    Upgrading Shift Knob

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello guys,

I think like most people in here I would like to keep my car OEM plus, with that said, after doing a lot of research, I didn't think there is a good upgrade for a weighted shift knob. I know people are going to say JHM or BFI, however I really hate the fact that they have their logo plastered all over the top of the shift knob; making it look like shit in my honest opinion. So, after messing around with the stock shift knob and trying to DIY it I found out that it is impossible, I did this successfully with my old A4 b7.

After doing some Googling I finally came across this company and found a promising option (Non OEM +), I bought one last night and will do a DIY as soon as I get it. Just wanted to make people aware, doesn't look like any body is aware. Don't jump in and buy it, wait for review.

I've really been thinking about this lately! I've noticed that the stock knob is just slippery and hard to hold onto under aggressive driving sometimes. I really haves to mentally focus to not let it slip out of my hand. $150 IMO is absurd for a knob.

This looks like it's much easier to maintain grip on, depending on size. I would prefer it anodized I think. Could even hydro dip it I guess. Definitely interested for $70!

Guess it depends on the type of knob you want to go with. I really wanted an air leather knob and I also did not care for the logos either. BFI does come with a 6-speed shift pattern coin with a smaller logo. I'm very happy with it.

Also be aware these aluminum knobs may get hot in the summer.

Don't give wrong that would be a good option, however the air leather doesn't match anything in the car, they need to make one to match the interior.

I saw that knob on Instagram too. I just can't stand the all metal type knobs. Can't somebody just make one that matches the interior smooth leather with the S4 logo

all metal knobs get extremely hot in the summer. JHM makes a Derlin knob, it's like a dense plastic almost, looks almost identical to what was posted but doesn't get nearly as hot in the summer.

The alcantara knob matches the interior perfectly if you have leather/alcantara seats...

The metal R8 / A3 / TT knob is heavy enough for my tastes and probably the heaviest OEM Audi knob available. Love how the knurled aluminum feels in my hand. My only complaint is it gets really cold in the winter.

Those are sweet! especially at that price. Will be nice when I install my JHM shifter.

No contact info at all. I hope it comes :). I really wanted to ask when the plain "S4" would be available

You are right, this option is not OEM+, I may have not explain myself very well on my original post, I gave up looking for an OEM+ option, so I decided to this give this one a try just because it looks very plain, is cheap and it is weighted. We will see how it looks on the car ounce I install it.

Extremely happy with the look/feel/quality. Everything needed for the install is included, however, there's no way you are tightening the collar clamp by hand with the flimsy Allen key provided. It required a socket wrench with the appropriate Allen bit too get the torque needed to actually grip on the shift lever. Other than that, install was super easy. Pulling apart the console is easy and straightforward. It was difficult to get the design on the knob lined up satisfactorily by adjusting the locking collar. I just used loctite to cement it in place aligned properly without movement. Haven't driven with it yet, but looking forward to it!

Fwiw, the stock knob only weighed in at 3.35 oz, so it is nearly 400% heavier.

Sweet! I'm really happy with it. Took a quick spin around the block. It just feels manlier. Definitely easier to hold onto! Plus, I wonder how much we can sell our stock knob to an A4 guy for?!

    Hello Guys,

This is my first DIY, so let me know of any comments. First of all the instructions on the site kind of suck and I had to read them a couple of times to understand them, not because I'm stupid, I just couldn't believe that they were recommending this kind of installation, they advise to sandwich the boot between the collard and the knob. With all that said here we go.

    Performance: 10
    Style: 7
    Design: 6

    1. Uninstall the boot and shift knob

    2. Turn the boot inside out and put the collar on the inside

    3. Once you have everything lined up, put a zip tie to secure the the boot to the collar. I put a bit of gorilla tape around because my boot was ripping a bit so I wanted to stop the rip from getting worse and to protect the boot from the zip tie. Do not completely secure the zip tie, you'll do it in the next step.

    4. Turn the boot right side out and install the knob, make sure everything lines up, then secure the zip tie to hold everything in place.

    5. Get your extension, wrench and hex bit out, put some lock tie on if you would like and tighten up the two screws.

This is what it looks like when it's all done, I will mess around with it a bit more to get a better boot fit, did the install right after work and it took me about fifteen minutes to get this done. It matches the trim pretty well, so I'm very please for the money and time. Must have, get one!

I didn't actually pull the locking collar through the leather. I left the whole collar under the leather and sandwiched the leather between the collar and the knob after screwing it down. I didn't want to risk tearing any seams while trying to stretch it over the collar. Looks just the same. I can get more pics of it would benefit anyone.

Do they make an uncircumcised version too?

All kidding aside, I just want my stock shift knob to be heavier. Is that so much to ask? Fill it with lead for all I care.

How are you guys popping the stock "one time use" clamp off? Is it a pain in the ass to do? Does a certain tool make it easier? Flathead vs. a pick, etc.
