    2005 Model clutch slave question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been searching to figure this one out but to no avail. My clutch has air in it for sure and I'm going about bleeding it, but when looking at the slave cylinder it looks nothing like what's available for sale in aftermarket or OEM. I bought the car from a guy who seemed to have a shady mechanic working on it... It's made out of cast steel with a newish looking bleeder valve on it... I'll post a picture of it in a little bit. Anyone run into this? It doesn't look like the aftermarket slave cylinder would even fit. It's the 2005 b6 1.8t 6spd Quattro.

The older B5 clutch slaves are metal and are often referred to as an 'upgrade' despite the only difference being the material. Does it have the 4 rings stamped on it? Might be an aftermarket/third party manufacturer.

Autozone makes an metal one that might be what you got. They work for some, not so much for others (i was one of those others)

Thanks guys I'll check that out.. It does not have the Audi emblem on it. It's not working that's for sure... I just bled the whole system and I'm getting vibrations when the clutch is middle of swing and will not disengage.

How did you bleed it? Generally our cars require a pressure bleeder to properly bleed our clutch. You can do that, or you can do a gravity bleed by leaving the bleeder open overnight and allow the fluid to drip down by itself. JHM also recommends having the rear of the car higher than the front to aid in bleeding.

Also, just noticed you're from Philly too. Cool shit.

There is a metal slave kit with braided line from usp. I was thinking of buying it but not sure if Its as necessary as the website says.
Maybe you have one of those ?

hmmm. That does NOT look like the autozone one. That looks much rounder than the Autozone one. I have no idea what brand that might be. How long did you bleed it for at that pressure?

This might lead me to believe that your master cylinder may to be blame.

Well... I already ordered a new slave, and master... We'll see if that resolves the issue in a week or so.

The clutch requires a higher pressure to bleed compared to the brakes. Id try bleeding it again at about 25-30psi before ordering more parts.

Its a terrible job, after doing it I wanted to sell the car until I realized I'd probably never have to do it again. B5s are way easier. As for all the commentary on pressure bleeding, I gravity bled my new master and it worked perfectly. I think when they are new they start out really easy to bleed and something changes over time since being unable to bleed my old one and having dis engagement problems with my clutch is why I changed mine in the first place.

I guess the power of love can herniate discs... Honestly how bad can it be? should remove it now so I don't have to do it all at once when the parts come in? It already blew up on me and leaked brake fluid on my carpet. I'm just hoping it's not my clutch because I don't have a lift and I know it's tight to change a clutch on just stands.

If I recall I spent about six hours replacing my clutch master cylinder. I had to remove the ECU and ECU box from underneath the hood and the pedal assembly from underneath the dash to get it out. Very tedious underneath the dash.

I just removed the whole assembly in 36 minutes. So I'm guessing the other 5 hours and 24 minutes is assembly?

LOL!! I guess I took apart more than I had to in order to remove it. Did you remove the ECM box or did you work around it?

I unscrewed it and put it slightly cockeyed.. I'm guessing assembly will be a lot harder though.. The hardest thing was getting it off the pedal... I ended up removing the clutch sensor and putting a bungee on the clutch to hold it up.. I had to get a small flathead to release those clips..

It's been a few years since I replaced mine. I just remember it as being a total pain in the a** and spending the better part of a Saturday getting it done. That also included replacing the slave cylinder and bleeding the complete hydraulic system.

And come to think of it I believe I gave up on the pedal clip and pulled the complete clutch/brake pedal assembly out so I could get at it easier.

Yea I found that DIY a little late... I will for sure use it for installation! And I thought I had to take out the assembly too but when I looked at a picture of the new master I saw how the clips worked and managed to get my head up in there enough to get it out. Once I figured that out it was only about 3 minutes of finagling to get the clip to release. I had a horrible time yesterday trying to get the old slave in though.. Im convinced it is the wrong slave.. The back of my arm is so bruised from using it as leverage trying to get it compressed enough to get it seated.

If you have to install the slave again there is an easy way to leverage it into place. Use a Phillips head screwdriver or any other metal rod. Place the rod through the bolt hole in the slave cylinder and into the threaded hole where the bolt is going to go. Push the rod toward the front of the engine until the slave cylinder is forward enough to clear the support ledge. Push the slave cylinder toward the transmission to hold it in place behind the ledge. Install the bolt. Done.

I had tried that with the old slave but I would still be short about 4mm. I was also worried about messing up the threads. But when I get the new slave I will use your advice because my arm is going to take a week to recover. I spent about 2 hours on it yesterday with no luck.
