New to the area in late April

    What's up folks?

Looks like I'm moving out to NorCal! I received my official offer letter on Monday this week from a LARGE wine/spirits manufacturer in Modesto.

I'm not too keen on moving to Modesto because of the property crime rates, and also because it appears to not have much of a night life for a single guy who is about to turn 31 (like me).

I'm looking to relocate to Manteca, Tracy, Livermore, or Lodi/Stockton. Anyone have any feedback on those areas?

Looks like I'll be inking the deal with my new employer late this week and will be moving to the area mid-late April. Excited to meet up with the local AZ nuts!

You must like wine :). If I'm thinking of the right place, I have some friends who've worked there in the past and they literally had closets stocked to the brim with that company's wine. If I were you, I'd probably just live in Sacramento. There more things to do than some of the areas you listed and the downtown/Old Sac area have come back. Also, from the perspective of living costs, Livermore and Tracy have gotten a lot more expensive due to the Bay Area commuters with families who want to own a decent house in a decent area but not pay $700+/sq ft. Stockton definitely no, it's probably worse than Modesto in terms of crime rate. Not too sure about Manteca.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm thinking Lodi could be a cool spot. Quiet, but fun. I've got a line on an apartment on a lake there, ground level, with an attached garage (1100+ sq. ft 2 bd 2 bath).

Sac is a bit too far for me to sign up for the commute. I'd like to stay under an hour into Modesto if possible.

    Thanks,

If your looking to go to Modesto but dont want to live there id look into Manteca or Lathrop (where JHM is)
There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who know binary and those who don't.

Lodi seems ok. I'd also look into Elk Grove. I work in Lathrop and live in Elk Grove so the drive is doable. It's basically the most south sac

Hey Dan, first off, congrats on the job. I would suggest you take a look at Lodi, especially in the area you've mentioned. I've been a FF here for 14 years now, and while it might not be the "perfect" community for some, rent prices are reasonable, the police dept is very proactive, and overall, it's a rather friendly town still, not to mention the continuous development of major stores at the south end of town like Costco etc. There are several bars downtown that are popular and there are some nice places to eat there as well. A drive to Modesto from here is a snap once you get south of Stockton. If you're looking for a decent place to call home, with decent amenities, is freeway close to Sac/Stockton/Gold Country/Tracy/Bay, then it's a great place. I live in the gold country, but would likely live here were it not for my kid situation. Most of the guys I work with live in Lodi and love it.

Now Sacramento? If you want that bigger city feel with all the assh*les that come with it, then be my guest. I've lived there for 30+ years (born in Sac) and got the F out over a decade ago because of what it's turned into. If shitty drivers, bumper to bumper commutes, high property crime rates, and art galleries, tapas bars, and girly boutiques every other business front are your thing, then go for it. I don't begrudge anyone that has to live there, but it wouldn't be my first choice, not by a long shot. Besides, it's still just a short rip up 99 or 5 to get to Sac if you do need to go. Just not my thing. Moms lived there since 1969 and I believe her when she says it's gone downhill. All I need are 10mins there and I'm ready to turn around and head back to the hills.

Take care, and good luck with your decision!

Don't even waste your time with Stockton.

Hey welcome to CA. I work close to Lodi, it's a nice small town with lots of wineries and a quaint downtown area. Oak farms, Michael David and Stama are some of my favorites wineries. Stay away from Stockton, Modesto and Lathrop. Tracy, Livermore and Lodi . If you like beer check out Lodi beer company http://lodibeercompany.com/

Hit me up once you get out here.

Yeah, whatever you do stay on the valley side. You don't want to have to deal with the Altamont Pass from Livermore. Accidents always happen there and it completely fucks up everything. Just a few weeks ago on my way out to Modesto for work the freeway was reduced to two lanes at the start of the Pass on the Livermore side, luckily I was able to get off one exit and get back on at the last entrance to by pass the closure. It was b/c a Tahoe was driving the wrong way on the Pass from the other side doing 80mph in the slow lane.

Besides 85, there is a lead member of NCAC FB page that lives in Lodi. It's a short trip from there to Sacramento

    Welcome to the area!

Definitely stay away from Stockton if you are worried about Modesto.

Manteca is a nice town, but not much to do. If you are looking for a more busy area with things to do, Modesto or Tracy would be better. Lodi can be nice depending on the area.

There are some nice areas in Modesto so don't completely rule it out.

Congrats on the new job. California is pretty awesome, however stay away from Stockton! Good luck with the move. Will you be hauling the S4? Or driving?

I think I'm gonna drive it out. I've never driven through the west parts of the country so it would be a great thing to see! Besides that, I've heard from multiple people (my brother in law included) that car haulers never get it out to the cost quite 100% right. I'd rather avoid that, if possible.

I'm not sure if I have a marketing requirement or not to get rid of booze... Will let you guys know!

Also, landed out here late last night with the car. Looking at a few places today in Turlock. Car is also getting cleaned up by Epic Detail in Modesto (hand wash, wax, etc.).

I decided to take the standard $100 deal to the next step and whipped out the buffer, some of my brushes and tools, and some other products... Check my build for pictures!
