Hey Dan, first off, congrats on the job. I would suggest you take a look at Lodi, especially in the area you've mentioned. I've been a FF here for 14 years now, and while it might not be the "perfect" community for some, rent prices are reasonable, the police dept is very proactive, and overall, it's a rather friendly town still, not to mention the continuous development of major stores at the south end of town like Costco etc. There are several bars downtown that are popular and there are some nice places to eat there as well. A drive to Modesto from here is a snap once you get south of Stockton. If you're looking for a decent place to call home, with decent amenities, is freeway close to Sac/Stockton/Gold Country/Tracy/Bay, then it's a great place. I live in the gold country, but would likely live here were it not for my kid situation. Most of the guys I work with live in Lodi and love it.
Now Sacramento? If you want that bigger city feel with all the assh*les that come with it, then be my guest. I've lived there for 30+ years (born in Sac) and got the F out over a decade ago because of what it's turned into. If shitty drivers, bumper to bumper commutes, high property crime rates, and art galleries, tapas bars, and girly boutiques every other business front are your thing, then go for it. I don't begrudge anyone that has to live there, but it wouldn't be my first choice, not by a long shot. Besides, it's still just a short rip up 99 or 5 to get to Sac if you do need to go. Just not my thing. Moms lived there since 1969 and I believe her when she says it's gone downhill. All I need are 10mins there and I'm ready to turn around and head back to the hills.
Take care, and good luck with your decision!
Don't even waste your time with Stockton.
