That sucks. He was probably nervous as hell too. Best not to show off in situations like this unless if you have enough experience with such shenanigans that it is second nature.

Wasn't this car for sale with a bad trans? That sucks because he prob had a SS kit installed that eliminated his reverse lock out.

He prob has a short shift kit that does not have the lock out for reverse its a pain in the ass without it. My buddy has it on his S4 and I hate driving it

Yeah I was about to say that. I remember my buddies s4 had a short shifter and there's no push down for it. Makes me never want to get a short shifter

Then how do you know if you're in reverse or first?

You don't it sucks. You pretty much have to go from 2nd to 1st when you stop.

worlds simplest fix, just run some wires from the reverse switch.

The PO did this to my avant. The SS kit was so badly adjusted that you couldn't find reverse (which kind of resolved the lock out issue, LOL!) but once I got it adjusted correctly it was moronic, so easy to miss first and be in reverse. One of the first things I did was swap out the SS kit and went back to stock. No lock out is an accident or mistake waiting to happen, IMO.
