    Exclamation OEM Key In-N-OUT?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,
I was looking on how to do oem accessory on a aftermarket radio with oem like accessory: Key off position radio still playing, key remove radio off. But I came more confused has no one seems to agree (forums posts). Urrently the radio turn off and on with the car in run position (real annoying). Would it be possible to tap into the power wire for the windows and sunroof to maintain the key in-nout? Any experts?

The ignition switch has a "Key IN" switch. It closes once you insert the key and turn it a bit. Then it opens when you pull the key out (make the ka-chunk noise). You can feel this - after removing the key if you insert it and remove it again (without turning): no ka-chunk. That's the key-in switch...not doing anything. When you drag the key out (notice the extra friction) and get the ka-chunk, that's the key-in switch doing its magic.

I think it would be easiest to hook up to the Key-in switch output (direct 12v+), put a fuse in-line (because safety) and connect that to your head unit's "ACC" wire. BAM, done.

Note: If you shut the car off and leave the key in - your radio will stay on and turn your battery into a boat anchor. If you want a timer function, or if you want it to cut power when you open the doors - you will need to get power somewhere else. It just depends how you want it to behave.

Note 2: I have never done this. I do not install car stereos for a living. I do not get paid to work on cars. I do not get paid to work on stereo equipment. I am barely qualified to tie my own shoes. The above is just "what I would try first", if I had a B6 and wanted accomplish the key-off, radio-still-playing thing. There may be an easier way, but this way does not add load to various module-controlled outputs or anything. It just taps off the existing switch output.

Oopsy. I did that thing where I forgot I was in the B5 forum, and posted as if this was about a B6. My bad.

Also, I did that thing where I had a moment of clarity the second after I hit the post button. See edits above regarding power-off behavior.

I'm looking up the wire you asked about.

You will need to find a wiring diagram to figure that out. I suggest that no one do electrical on their car without a wiring diagram and the ability to read it.

    Diagram.

Red wire. Pin 86S. The 2 top ones are also red. Those are the direct power input from the battery (read: not fused at all, don't mess around with these). Those inputs are probably big, and the "key-in" output is probably a much smaller wire.

And definitely don't go in blind on this stuff. A diagram is critical. In the immortal words of Redline380: "You need to know what you are doing...Its like a rainbow jungle in there."

Thanks Walky! I'll show this to my dad who's a mechanic and will probably know more then me about that diagram.
