Audi RS5 - time for a third engine??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Bought the car in November with 29500 miles on the clock. Had nothing but trouble. Audi dealership omitted the fact the car had had a new engine the year before. They know it did because they fitted it.
Well I have done around 1700 easy going miles in the car since I bought it and now the "new" engine is knocking. In total the new engine has done about 10k and take a listen to the audio - opinions are very welcome. I would say it needs another crate delivered from Germany. What do you think?
I also posted about the gearbox clunking which some of the members confirmed is not normal. There is another thread with a guy who had the same noise in an S5 and needed the whole transmission replacing. Of course Cheltenham Audi say it is a characteristic of the car........

Next up is my thread detailing why you should avoid Cheltenham Audi in the UK, at all costs, if buying an Approved Used Audi. Misrepresentation, lies, failure to correct any of the MPC findings (several) including worn tyres, contravening my rights under the consumer rights act which is a criminal offence and much more. Solicitor in place and court battle on its way!

    Still not working Abbyfaz.

I'd like to hear what the mechanical failure sounds like, is it knocking or tapping?

Did they rebuild the engine, replace components or swap the entire unit? It's extremely unusual for a new engine to fail with the same symptoms as the previous one but highly likely a rebuilt engine would if they didn't replace the component causing the original failure, ie, oil pump or component in the oil system.

Is it possible to get a detailed list from the dealership to see what they replaced?

Sounds like tapping to me. Regardless, wow that's bad.

Also it looks like you have to download the audio. Can't listen to it straight off dropbox it seems.

Hi, this is a bugger its not working. A5 owners club link seems to be as already had a response from their. I will add here what info I can soon, at work at the minute. It sounds pretty bad though perhaps a spun bearing or something. Very metallic deep knock. The previous engine had something go through the intake apparently doing just 30mph and destroyed that one. I will see how else I can upload the audio. Any ideas would be appreciated.

By the way this engine block was new from Germany i.e. a 2014 block when installed by Cheltenham Audi.

This is what I mean, Cheltenham Audi say an engine block but was it just the block and they swapped the heads onto a new block or was it a complete engine. They will always go for the cheaper option if the dealership is paying and something that damaged the block could also have damaged the head, especially if it went down the intake!

I used to live in Charlton Kings, how is Cheltenham these days?

Hi Here is the report for the last engine. It was block, heads and intake that was renewed. I bought the car from Cheltenham but am from Preston so don't know the area at all. It was a long way to go for a piece of crap. I'm not too sure how to attach the pic so it might take some goes. It keeps asking for a URL? Failing this I can perhaps pm you the report if you want it.

    Haha, I'm from Lancaster originally!

No need to send the report, you've listed what they replaced. Have you spoken to a local dealer? A replacement engine will be under warranty, can you take it to somewhere more local and let another set of eyes look over it/do the work?

Ah a fellow Northener! All good!! Well Preston Audi have been fairly good. In the first 500 miles they fixed the steering column knock with a new intermediate shaft, did a health check exposing all the jobs Cheltenham didn't do prior to sale (incredible they never rectified any of their own MPC checks) , updated the software on the engine and box, readapted the box and replaced the camshaft sensors that had thrown a code.

Preston were investigating the engine knock and agree its an abnormal noise that gets worse when the engine gets warm. They got to the stage of checking the oil pressure (i'm presuming this was fine), changing the oil with no visible signs of a problem and taking the sound recording I hope you have managed to open. The last from Audi UK after listening to that audio was to open the top end and inspect, however they stopped doing this when I told them I was going to reject the car. Preston kindly transported the car free of charge to Cheltenham Audi and then the Head of Business there kindly informed me he was going to charge me 80 pounds to put it into storage and 4 pounds a day storage fee! As far as I know that is where it is sitting now! haha. I work offshore so wont be home for another 3 weeks...
