Force open 2.0T k03 wastegate

Hey all,

I need to see if my turbo is causing some funny noise and possibly be on the way out. My mechanic told me to wire the wastegate on the turbo open to see if the sound is originating from the turbo. Anyone have any experience with such a task? Any help would be quite appreciated :)

I could be wrong, but I thought the B7s had an adjustable wastegate actuator rod. What does the noise sound like? Metal on metal rattle while coasting? Obviously, whatever you do with the turbo, make sure it's cold. It's a weekend diy to change it if needed.

They do. I had to cram my hand up there to adjust it last year.

It sounds like a jet engine spinning up and down. Again, I don't exactly know if it's the turbo, so I want to essentially disable it to see if the sound goes away or if there's no effect and it's not the turbo.

If you want the WG to stay open just undo the WG rod.

Remember to mark where it was set before doing so though.

If its a whining noise almost like a supercharger would make then yes your turbo is on the way out. It means there is excessive shaft play causing the turbine wheel (typically the exhaust) to make contact with housing. Mine did it all the time just before it let go. From what i hear it's fairly normal to hear it on initial acceleration on a cold start.

Lolwut? Force the wastegate open to hear the turbo? That will make it not even spool up...

Just pull the catalyst off and inspect the turbine for damage and check for play in the shaft.

The idea is if you open the turbo and the sound disappears, the sound was coming from the turbo this whole time :P

Get a LONG screw driver and put the metal end on the turbo and put the handle to your ear. You will hear if the funky sound is coming from your turbo because the noise will be amplified in your ear.
