    Question on chain tension/shimming. Pics!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just put main engine tensioner / guides in.

Wanted to see if any of you know where the shims need to go ?

Also. Does anyone know what the torque setting is on the mechanical adjuster? And the tensioners?

    Here's some pics!

shims go on the right and left side chain tensioner that you don't have installed in your pictures. i can get torque specs on a couple hours if no one else shows up with them.

How hard is it to replace the guides and tensioners after locking the timing up? Just unbolt and swap?

Getting the car into time was the tedious part. Since it had skipped timing. The lower chains weren't to bad. The uppers might suck. Keeping the mechanical adjusters seeded correctly while putting the chain on will not be fun I'm sure.

I think the white shim location I have solved. They only go in the two upper banks.

I wanted to make sure I didn't need them in the lowers.

Can't wait to get her back up and running.

Do you know if im going to experience any immobilizer issues when all the wiring is put back? And I try starting it after full engine pull?

I don't have vag. So it could be an issue.

No issue as long as you get it together correctly. Be ABSOLUTELY SURE that you've pressed the electronic adjusters in all the way before putting the mechanical adjusters back on. Not doing this will break them and cost you a grand per broken adjuster.... don't make my mistake.

Is there an easy solution to fitting the mechanical adjuster on while I'm trying to fight the chain on? I can see why you didn't seed it all the way.

Maybe I can seed, and tighten the adjuster. And then put the chains on?

in order to get the chain back on you have to have your adjusters that you push the shims into, collapsed all the way (with the drill bit poked into the hole keep it mechanically collapsed - if they are new, they should already have those little pins in them keeping them collapsed) to allow for slack in the system. First, I started with the chain draped over the mechanical adjuster / cam sprocket and lower sprocket with the mechanical adjust fully seated and the bolt in it but just finger tight to keep it from moving around. Then I very very carefully worked the chain over the collapsed guide tensioner using a pick tool and ultra thin flathead to carefully work it up and over the lip of the plastic guide...

TAKE YOUR TIME. Don't get frustrated and force it... this is the most important thing I can tell you. It's like a horrible rubix cube of suffering, but you'll get it figured out. the most important part is keep that electrical adjuster safe. You can get a bit forceful with the guides and be ok.
If anything, use the cam sprocket as the "loosen bolt a bit more in order to get more slack in the system" to get it all back together. Don't do that with the mechanical adjuster.

Is it necessary to switch out the chains since they are not the cooperate to chain rattle?

wear on the chains will indicate the need to switch. I did not switch mine - I did all the other wear items. YMMV.
