Check engine light- variable valve timing

Few days ago, my engine light popped on. A few mins with the vag com and sure enough- my variable valve timing. My mechanic claims I will need to pull the engine to fix this.... Is that true? Anyone else had this happen? This might have been on another thread but I couldn't find anything recent. He also tells me this won't break the engine any further if I continue to drive on it, what are the real effects?
