    Timing Question

I recently decided to replace my valve cover gaskets, cam seals, tensioner gasket and half-moon seals. I set the engine to TDC, confirmed by the crank pulley and cam lock bar. However when i popped open my valve covers, I didn't see tick marks on cam chain gears (i'm assuming they were at the bottom most point out of my view because i didn't see them on the sides either). The upper chain guide was already at its lowest position, and the lower chain guide was fully extended, therefore i'm not counting 16 rollers between the marks on the cam plates in this position (passenger side). The same applies under the driver side cover as well, i don't see the cam gear marks lined up with the marks on the cam plates. Prior to tearing things apart, I had zero issues, no codes, no misfires. How can the engine not be at TDC if the crank pulley and cam lock bar are in place, does this make any sense? My solution was just to replace all seals except the half moon and tensioner gaskets and button everything back up because i know things were fine as is.

I'm not certain, but I'd imagine that if it was out of phase I should see an engine code or something, no? Again the engine ran fine prior to the job and i noticed the camshaft orientation as soon as i opened the valve cover.

Cams spin half as fast as the crank, 2 turns crank = 1 turn cam.
You were at tdc on the exhaust stroke.

Rotate crank 360deg (1 turn) and look again.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.
