    James' long term build thread...

Well I guess since I'm ordering parts it's about time to start a build thread. I'm in the process of building a home, so progress will be slow. I don't want to get into plans, because I'm sure they will change on a regular basis. But as a quick run through... Fresh color (paint or wrap), wheels, low, forged, boost, e85.... That's all I will say!

    Okay so about the car...
    1999 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 2.8
    5 speed
    Heated leather
    Power everything
    Sunroof and etc.

The car is in dire need of driveline mounts, front control arms, and struts (will be coilovers). The car has a touch over 191k at the moment. All services are up to date, but I plan to do the timing belt soon just to be safe..

I've ordered some parts that are on the way. But for now I'll post what she currently looks like. The only bad is the rock chips and flaking clear coat. Otherwise it's a pretty straight car. Interior is flawless just about.

Only changes so far is a muffler delete and a dual polished tip.

    Stay tuned!

Nice starting platform, keen to see how it ends up! Interior and handles look like 97/98 build year, but all the best!

Maintaining a 12 year old Audi is about as expensive as Charlie Sheen's coke habbit.

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. I am not opposed to keeping it red. But it definitely need paint!

Plans are rods, pistons, cams, new bearing/caps etc, stock crank most likely. I am looking for a block now. As I'd like to keep the factory motor in the car until the other is ready because I enjoy driving it. I am either going to go with a big single or a PES supercharger. If I go PES, I may not go forged pistons.

If you're throwing rods into it why not do pistons? You'll melt a piston long before rods are even an issue

But at the end he said he may not go forged pistons if he goes the supercharger route. That's what I'm talking about there. May as well leave the rods out because the pistons will still fail long before any rods decide to go.

Appreciate your input. But from previous builds, I have had bad luck with stock rods. This is my first Audi build, so by all means I am no professional here. Not saying that I wouldn't do pistons as well if I go PES, but that's a decision for the latter. For now I'm focusing on maintenance parts and look while I find a block.

On that note, what gap should I run with a copper plug and stock motor? I have a feeling these plugs are old as dog shit.

A family member of mine is wanting to get some new wheels. They have these in 18x8.5 +35 that I'm considering. I really wanted to go 19"+ but they would atleast hold me over until I can afford something "fancy". What do yall think?

You're lucky because there's many, many high HP builds on stock motors within these forums. Did you know the 2.8 rods are the same as the 2.7T rods, and that those rods have held 400-450wtq depending on torque onset?

Let's take the supercharger for example. It provides a linear powerband which means torque onset is much smoother than with a turbo. You can hokd 10psi on the stock 2.8 pistons but as soon as something goes wrong with your fueling you'll start wishing you put in forged pistons.

As for plugs, most people gap to .028". Factory spec is like .024-.032 or something

I found that the rods are the same, because I couldn't find forged 2.8 rods at the time. I believe i will be running eagle rods, because I've used them a few times before and had good luck.

That gap is for stock, correct?

Not a big update by any means, but some parts are starting to arrive.
