Intake Manifold - How clean does it need to be when changing gaskets?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm changing my gaskets out on my Intake Manifold (car is at 210,000 mi). I stuffed the ports w rags and have been using brake cleaner to get the grime off. As you
can see in the pics it's coming off, but there's still some grime.

Does this look clean enough to install the gasket on the drivers side? Or does it need to be cleaned more?

I'm afraid to use anything abrasive.. I bought a polishing kit that fits on a drill from autozone (medium grit) that a guy said to use at the store.. but it was leaving slight swirl marks.

You should be good as long as all the surfaces are smooth so that the intake manifold seals to the heads properly.

I accidently snapped a mangold bolt when trying to torque it to 10Nms. Any idea what I should do now?

I have no idea how to get it out. It's the 2nd from bottom on the drivers side.

Possibly grab it with a vice grip and loosen that way if there is some material to grab on to.

Metal drill bit smaller than the threads.

Then chase the threads with the correct thread tap, or carefully with a new IM bolt.

Broken bolts are tricky, but not hard.

    Get an extractor.

Drill bolt stud, hammer extractor in, and remove stud.

    Be careful, drill slow.

Thanks for the help. I buttoned everything back up after changing the aux water pump and
she started right up. I may wait to get that bolt replaced, and may pay an experienced mechanic
    to switch it out.

The issue is I always have to use an adapter on my torque wrench to concert down to 1/4" and
since it was wobbly it didn't register correctly at 10Nms. It allowed over torque.

Time to buy a nice torque wrench..
