    ATT upgrade question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been doing an extensive google search, but having a hard time understanding exactly what happened. Here is the info:

I'm in a 2013 B8.5 which came with the t-mobile MMI. For a few years now I have been successfully using truphone to have google search access on the car's MMI.

Last week I upgraded my modem from t-mobile to ATT through the dealership here in Houston for free. Now my truphone doesn't work which I can understand as it is ATT and not T-mobile anymore.

    My questions:
    1) What exactly was my upgrade? DO I have 4g or still with 3G but with ATT
    2) What options do I have with this new provider instead of paying the crazy fee ATT requests. Just like we had with Truphone or the old PTEL?

I tried searching, but with the old system, the new cars coming out with the new system, and this upgrade, I am just not sure what I am looking for.

    Please advise.

Maybe I can add to this since Audi Fort Worth just performed the modem update on my 2013 S4. If you go in to your dealership and complain about the signal because of T-Mobile's tower upgrade, they should upgrade the modem in your car for free. I'm sure you need to be in a qualifying area that was affected by T-Mobile's frequency change, or so I've read.

This is where I initially read about it:

And here is a scanned copy of the letter from Audi discussing the new data plans:

Audi Fort Worth off of University Drive. Figured since I bought the car used from them, might as well have them service it. It's close to the Fort Worth Zoo.

If you go there, speak to Tie in the service department. She's the only person I'll deal with from now on and she's really helpful.

Here's the other half of that letter on my Google Drive that explains what this upgrade is all about. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_P...ew?usp=sharing

The modem upgrade is not an upgrade to AT&T. It's an upgrade to support the new frequencies that T-Mobile is moving to in their refarming effort to free up more spectrum for their LTE network. The new frequencies happen to be the same as AT&T, so with the new modem you can use AT&T as the provider, but don't have to. T-Mobile still works and so should Truphone as they are just using the T-Mobile network. You probably just need to reconfigure the access point in your settings.

The upgrade also supports the faster 3G networks (HSPA and HSPA+) as opposed to just UMTS. So, the service should be a bit faster if you have good HSPA+ coverage in your area.

you probably have a new imei number and needs to be tied to the SIM ID at truephone. but yes you now have access to 3g with the upgrade as long as the sim and truphone support it.
