    Hi guys,

so today i took my car to the smog station and after about 2 mins, they told me that they couldn't smog my car because i don't have an emissions sticker under my hood.

Can anyone with a 2004.5 A4 1.8T (USP if it makes any difference) please take a look under their hood and snap a picture of the emissions sticker? I'd greatly appreciate it. thanks!!

    What state are you in?

Oh.. bay area... you might have CA emissions on your vehicle, which I believe are different than what this CT car had.

    And, that's a 2004, don't know if there's a difference between 2004 and 2004.5 on emissions.

I don't have a 1.8, but my 3.0, the only emissions related sticker under the hood that I'm aware of is for the vacuum line diagram.

Why would that be needed for emissions testing? Seems like something that would be too easy to tamper with to rely on for any official test.

I guess they need it for reference so they can set up the machine or something? All they said was that i could go down to the dealership and pick up a new one, then they could do the smog check. But for $50ish?? that's audi doing what they do best: highway robbery! I know i didn't have that sticker on there when i went for my last smog (at a different smog station). I'll bring the picture from old guy's post and show it to them if they ask.

    Keep you all posted. thanks!

A picture of the sticker won't fly.

The cost of the sticker is likely because it is an official emissions sticker. I'd guess that the dealer orders them based on the vin and the barcode is vehicle specific.

The barcode is not the VIN. I just decoded it. It matches the number that is printed next to it:

    18VJGHHF

Seeing as these are ordered by part number, and the catalog does not have a call out for "vin required when ordering" or similar - I'm pretty sure it's just Audi's normal "pick a price out of the sky" MO.

When I move to CA in 94, I learned that they check that sticker to see if your engine is a 49 state or CA emissions certified. A non CA sticker would have cost me a $350 fee or something like that. Since my car had a engine swap to a new year, higher spec engine, the concept of the sticker to prove it was a cleaner running truck was kind of pointless, I had a two year newer engine from a passenger car ( the donor car was CA legal).

A sticker from Mitsubishi cost $12.... The person that did the inspection proclaimed how lucky I was, cause my car from Massachusetts already met CA emissions. I tried not to laugh. Short story, based on my experience, they just want to see the CA compliance sticker. I eventually had to get my swap certified, but no one ever questioned my shiny new sticker. BTW, it at least should look real.

Update: the printout worked for me. the smog guy told me to keep that printout in my car for next time. I told him that I've been going to him for the past 8 years with no problem, so he was good with it. YMMV
