Convertibles. Dumb questions from new owners.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'll start with the first few.

    1. Do you ever park with the top down, to run in a store etc?

    2. When you use valet do you leave the top down?

    3. Any issue with having it open all the time, parked in the garage etc, when I have it up it seems like it has lots of creases from being folded.

    4. My callers tell me the Bluetooth on my 2013 S5 sounds like the top is down even when closed. Anyone know if firmware or Vagcom can help with Bluetooth mic?

Add your own dumb question, or help me answer my first 4.

All the time, but I live in a really small town

    2. When you use valet do you leave the top down?
What's a valet, jk, I probably would put it up

Mine stays down pretty much all summer, creases go away pretty quick.

    1) Yes, but with windows up. Depends also on where big city vs suburbs/sm. town.
    2) Never use valet. Would rather drive around for 20 mins.
    3) No issues. Have to agree, creases are pretty minimal. Otherwise, I use 303 products and dry in full sun
    4) Don't use it

What's the most amount of days that you had your cab exposed to continuous rainy days?

Who's tinted their windows? Is rear darker than others? What % did you guys go with. IL is 35% limit - which looks light from shop display - would like to see this on a car so I can picture what it looks like. I've seen cars with much darker tint than 35%. And if you got a tint ticket from the po po, how much was it for?

Absolutely - including all day at work. I will warn you on this...my MINI has some sun rot, basically caused the stitches to fall come out on the seams of the seats. Not sure if an Audi would do this...but assume it could.

    2. When you use valet do you leave the top down?
    Never valet.

    3. Any issue with having it open all the time, parked in the garage etc, when I have it up it seems like it has lots of creases from being folded.
Never had issue, including leaving it down in the garage all winter long. But...make sure the top is dry before leaving it down. You don't want it to get moldy.

    Can't answer...

I have an A5 convertible and will leave the top down if leaving the car for as much as an hour.

I also tinted my windows to 70% (I live in NY where I think the limit is 35). I've had it for one year and haven't been stopped or ticketed. I thought that 35% wasn't worth the bother.

My windows are tinted the same color front and rear. I have no idea what that % is, but as a guide, I nearly hit pedestrians at night if the windows are not rolled down.

    I have owned 3, a 2007 S4, 2010 S5, & now a 2013 RS 5.
    1. Do you ever park with the top down, to run in a store etc?
Rarely, but when I do the windows are up the wind screen is in place and all attractive items are out of plain view. Additionally I park where I can keep an eye on the car if I'm running in to the store quickly. Anything longer than a minute or two, I will put the top up and park in BFE and as far away from any other vehicle or shopping cart as I can get. The extra walking doesn't bother me.
    2. When you use valet do you leave the top down?
    Never, don't trust 'em.
    3. Any issue with having it open all the time, parked in the garage etc, when I have it up it seems like it has lots of creases from being folded.
As others have stated once the top is and closed in the secure position, the wrinkles go away very quickly. However I also am fanatical ~ convertible topcare & maintenance. Adams,Chemical Guys,Sonax, Detailers Domain all have spectacular videos to help U out if U aren't familiar w/what I am referencing.

    4. My callers tell me the Bluetooth on my 2013 S5 sounds like the top is down even when closed. Anyone know if firmware or Vagcom can help with Bluetooth mic?
With top down driving make sure all of the windows are up and the windscreen is in place. That does make a difference, however if you have not looked at your MMI Navigation Plus manual, mine shows options on page 33-34 for adjusting your telephone settings. Telephone> Settings>Phone settings. - ring tone volume/- call volume can be set to Min-Max./-Microphone input level can be adjusted. Lastly, the garage my convertible and every available opportunity, always at home and always at work. I try to minimize the environmental exposure as much as possible as I plan on keeping his vehicle for several years. That said, I am a detail fanatic and it is as protected as it can possibly be.
Hope this helps, good luck & have fun w/ top down driving. Nothing like it!!!

    1. Never
    2. Never
    3. Wouldn't know because I always put the top up if I'm not driving it
    4. Don't use it

Sincere question- Since the top is so easy to put up and down, why do some owners keep the top down in the situations described above? Why subject the interior of the car to extra wear and tear from the sun or weather elements during those times when you are not driving the car?

P.S. is the convertibles only subforum dead or what? never any action on this subforum. I know, car guys hate convertibles, but I don't care.

Rear window separation is an issue with these cars, and although there are some home remedies, I think it can often lead to top replacement. Totally speculation on my part, but I suspect the opening and closing of the top causes some stress to the glue joints on the window, so I do it as little as possible. Mine is not my daily driver, so I leave it in the garage with the top down, and only put it up if I'm leaving it somewhere sketchy for any length of time, or if I get caught out in the rain.

Walked out today to see the dreaded glass window separation that everyone mentions. Wondering how bad the install would be if i purchase an aftermarket and do it myself.

If the separation is minor, you might want to try and repair it. There's a fairly good discussion on the topic on here somewhere.
