APR introduced the K04 tune in 2007 and called it Stage 2. I bought a new BW K04 and got one of APR's early Stage 2 programs. It was called Stage 2 back then. This was just with APR.
Back then you only had limited choices:
- Stage 1 (chip)
- Stage 1+ (chip + injectors)
- Stage 2 (K04 + injectors)
- Stage 3 (GTRS turbo + injectors + MAF + manifold + TIP)
That's all there was at that time.
Since then, people stared introducing stages and pluses around Test Pipes/HFC/Deletes. The original stages were built to work with or without the stock exhaust and cat. They would just make a cat delete just an option on a Stage, but never call it something different.
Now I believe other tuning companies never called the K04 a Stage 2 setup and this also has led to some of the confusion in stage meaning.
