Best Summer tires for around 500-600 dollars canadian

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    All,

thanks again for helping out. 2005 audi a4 b6 1.8t - 230,000 km in need of new summer tires.

Looking to see your thoughts on brand and model for summer tires in the range of 500-600 dollars Canadian. Looking for something that will have pretty good tire life and obviously something that grips the road fairly well.

I am not looking for canadian tire type tires and prefer to stick with the big brand names.

Not trying to go cheap here but just trying to save money where I can as I have other expenses. If you feel there is something great at a higher price point please throw that in so I can compare.

    Thanks all......

Size will make a big difference but Discount Tire is giving you $100 off a set of tires right now.

Michelin PSS 225/45/17's are $484 shipped in 'Murica. Don't know what that translates into canuck dolla bills.

OP have a look at http://www.1010tires.com/ for reviews and comparison between tires.
I personally run Continental DWS 06 and have zero complaints.

    Zing!

Had nitto nt555 tires that lasted a while. Still has decent tread left. But a plug and a slight bubble is making me replace them this year. Wanting to try the Hankook v12 tires. I don't drive much, so the tread wear isn't an issue. I did with my nitto tires though, and why I picked them. Great treadwear and was recommended by all the mustang guys who love burnouts. But I can attest, great tread wear.

I doubt you will find decent tires new around this price range from big brand names. You also didn't mention the size, so perhaps it's possible in 17".
I am looking at Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, but they are not cheap. I will look around for the Hankooks, but had a hard time finding it for a decent price.

Joining in as I'm also looking for some summers or good all seasons to run on my new wheels. My big question is how many of you guys run non XL load rated tires. I'd like to get in on that DTD $100 dollar off special but the only set of XL rated tires they have up on eBay are some Yokohama all seasons. Is running a 92 rated tire instead of a 92xl gonna be a bad idea. I feel like it won't be but I'm typically a play it by the book sort of guy when it comes to ratings like this. I'd like to say $100 but not if it means skimping on the correct tire.

I got some 18" at Crappy Tire for under 600 installed.

You have to wait for the buy 3 get one free sales at crappy tire and most important...YOU CAN HAGGLE WITH THE KID AT THE COUNTER. If the kid says he cant move the price, go to another Crappy tire...there is lots.

I have had different staff at the same Crappy tire either move the price down, or keep the price where it is...all depends who you get.

I know you say you are not loking for Canadian tire tires.....however, thats what you are going to be into in that price range...they have some decent brands.

When I bought my vehicle it had winters that were just below the load index recommended for our car and I ended up blowing a belt and had a side wall bubble eventually on two tires. Whether or not that was just coincidence I don't know. The load index numbers change with relatively little change in vehicle weight, like 50lb increments or something like that. So take that for what it's worth.

To OP, Sumitomo HTR Z III aren't a "big name" tire but they get great reviews on this site and tire rack as far as a budget tire goes, I've bought them twice. Living in Canada I try discounttiredirect, pretty sure I had them to my door for <$600 with shipping, duty, and taxes. Otherwise you're going to get raped by the exchange rate right now shopping for anything south of the border.

    +2
Paying for big name brands is for the birds. Most of the big name tires are rebranded from the same non name brand factories anyway.
Not that I would trust my life to some Chinese knock offs. I got a set of Nankang Noble sports made in Taiwan. Seems of good quality after 10k miles. Got them from discount tire direct shipped for $285 usd.

Michelin recently earned top place in independent tire tests. Goodyear is second best.

Canuckistan dollar to Merican is about .76. So if you're shopping at tire Rack, that is about $456 Barack's. I'm also planning on getting a set of summer tires for my spare rims. When I shop, I do the typical read the tire rack reviews as well as the consumer reports tests. Its not foolproof. but it does help narrow things down a bit. I don't like noisy tires, and if I see a lot or reviews with noise complaints, that one's off the list.

For UHP summers, looking at CR's ratings, they have the Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 as being a bit noisier and poorer ride than the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport was the top tire in UHP test at CR (21 tires tested).

They also tested the GT Radial Champiro UHP1 tire. That tire goes for about $87 US. It tested mid range, with poor tread life and noise being the biggest issues. According to CR, there were more expensive tires with lower ratings...

Comments from other review sites about this tire:

Not worth the effort, grip is above what you would expect from a low price tyre but the wear rate and noise level makes this tyre a waste of money. 5000 miles from the rear (drive tyres) and only 6000 from the front.
tyre reviewed on January 16, 2013
Champiro UHP1 fitted on front wheels but after 10 months star shaped cracks between all the outer treads on both tyres, unfortunately their dealers are not allowed to make a decision on whether tyre is faulty or not, so tyres will have to be taken off and returned to the manufacturer for evaluation and decision will be made within 14 days as to cause (which is obviously manufacturing fault), so presumably car will have to be on axle stands for 14 days waiting for decision, been out and bought 2 new branded tyres
Looking at CR's tests, the general pattern is the more expensive tires have a better rating. The only outlier is the Champiro UHP1, mid range results and really low in cost but it has some serious real life complaints. To be fair, all tires have negative comments, but these seem worse than most. I agree with John, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport seems to be one of the top tires. Tire Rack has them in 235/45ZR17 (97Y) XL for about $143 (US). They have a 30,000 mile tread wear warranty... I'm guessing they are pretty soft. According to CR's test, they had the best treadwear of the 21 tires tested.

    Thanks everyone.

    I have 17's

It's either the Michelin Pilot Supersport like all have mentioned. Hopefully this is the right one

    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...um=345YR7PSSXL

    or the continentals DW

    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...port%20Package

however, comparing side by side and reviews the michelin are winning.

Now I just need to do some canadian price compares.

Once again thank you, thank you, thank you for all the help

Yeah, go PSS if you can swing the extra bit. DW is not bad but it's not to the level of PSS and the sidewalls feel softer.

I like Michelins because they are quiet, have great treadwear, and consistently score at the top of performance tests... It is the benchmark for a great all-around summer tire.

Try the sumitomos. They're rated higher in Tire Rack's testing, are cheaper and I personally can't find a real downside to them aside from tread life. I was in the same boat though. I didn't drive much so I was totally fine with that trade off. Mine have a good 15k on them and are still doing great. I do have to rotate them soon though...
