4.2 A6 with an oil level warning problem

    Hi folks,

I've been getting a "low oil level" warning intermittently in my 2007 4.2 A6. Sometimes I can get 75 or 100 miles into a trip before it comes on; other times it'll come on before I get to the end of the driveway.

The level is ALWAYS good. My mechanic tells me that "the sensor isn't giving a code", but my thought would be to simply replace the sensor anyway. Is it possible this could, somehow, be something besides a bad sensor? Again, the actual oil level is 100% perfect.

Thanks for any advice you guys might have!

    Check my thread:

Had the same issue with my 2007 A6 4.2. Turned out to be an oil sensor.

You need the OEM in order to get rid of the message. You can buy it here:

    https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-C6_A6...4.2L/ES281038/

    or search part number:
    06E907660

through google.com and you might find it a bit cheaper. Make sure it is OEM though! Also, once you have it off the car, stick you finger into the oil pan and slide it through the bottom of the oil pan looking to check the sludge buildup. I found a lot of buildup in mine and oil would get dark as soon as I left the shop from the oil change. I had to drop the oil pan an clean it. Thankfully the sluge was present only on the bottom of the oil pan. Oil would stay clean for thousands of miles since then.

    Good luck!

Thanks very much! I'll make sure it's OEM - no point in trying to save money on the part!

I'll be sure to check for the sludge issue. Appreciate it!

No problem. Keep us posted. Also, when you get oil message and open the hood, it resets the oil level error message. It makes the computer think that you checked and added oil. It should come back after driving 40 - 50 miles since the last time you opened the hood.
