Bentley Request - AVK 3.0 Alternator Removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey everyone,

Seems like I've lost my Bentley files (been switching to a new computer recently). Does anyone have the pages available for the alternator removal on the AVK 3.0? I'm going to be replacing my voltage regulator this weekend. I know the process is pretty straightforward (get to service position, remove serp belt, remove alternator), but it would be nice to eliminate any surprised that I am not currently expecting.

    Thanks

Whoa! No mention of service position. I wonder how much of a bitch that serp belt tensioner is without the tool or service position. These instructions make this seem like a 2 hour job at most. Once the alternator is out, swapping the regulator takes like 3 minutes. I'll provide pictures and a write up so that we can have an official Audizine diy for this.

It's not that difficult. 3/4" wrench fits over it, then a long extension to push it down. Done it a few times, just takes patience.

Yeah I was thinking about fabbing up a tool to hook into the wrench so that it doesnt slip when pressing down on it. Maybe I'll take a piece of flat stock and cut out grooves. Who knows. Thats the fun for tomorrow, after I get my car started and drive it ~25 miles to my parents house where all my tools are. I'm hoping for a fast repair cause the weather is gonna be great tomorrow and I'm trying to have a BBQ with some friends.

With the alternator removed, make sure the bearings are in good condition. If there is any noise at all when rotating the alt rotor quickly, the bearings or the alternator should be replaced.

If you are replacing the voltage regulator due to brush wear, make sure the slip rings on the rotor that the brushes run against are not groved. You should probably have the slip rings machined to remove any wear groves or rough slip rings surface. Otherwise the new brushes will wear out quickly.

So I tackled this yesterday. I'm not sure how anyone can do this without service position. Its too tight to get the bolts out due to their length. Ended up taking 3 hours. Slip rings are totally worn but not awful. New regulator is reading 13v via torque(up from 12.2). I'll grab a multi meter soon enough to see what its actually reading on the posts. Spoke with the manager of the advanced auto while my battery was charging and learned the car quest brand alternator is a Bosch reman with lifetime warranty. If I have issues moving forward, I'll be grabbing one of those for sure as you can get it for $130 after promo codes.

I did it on my brothers A6 AVK along with the serpantine belt. I didn't put it in service position but it was a major PIA.

Alternator bearings are not odd sizes, they can be bought at any bearing distributor. Changing the bearings can be difficult however. New bearings can easily be damaged if installed wrong.

The slip rings shown in the pic above look fairly good considering the brushes look like there is some wear remaining too.

The output voltage should be about 14 volts with a charged battery when the engine is running faster than idle speed.

Make sure the electrolyte in the battery cells is above the top of the plates inside the cells. Maintenance free batteries eventually loose water like regular batteries do, so a cell top up with distilled water is important if the level in any of the cells is not above the plates.

Yeah that reading was with torque. I grabbed a multimeter today so I'll test it tomorrow for actual voltage. And yeah, the slip rings didn't look terrible, but they could have looked better. Well see how this week goes. Still need to order a new o2 sensor to replace my fault front o2 thats causing misfires and poor mpg. Just got 200 on a tank....

At idle on cold start with radio, parking, and fog lights on, my multimeter is saying 13.7 Volts. How's that sounding? Per my research, it seems anywhere from 13.6-14.2 is fairly normal at idle. I'll have to test again once I have someone to rev the engine a bit.

Thats what I like to hear! Drivers side front O2 is getting installed next. Then I should be a good spot in regards to maintenance items and such. FWIW, the guy at Advanced Auto tried telling me my alternator was 100% dead. He clearly didnt have the connection to properly run the test.

Yeah the top bolt was slightly seized (just dirty) which wouldnt allow me to unscrew it the rest of the way due to clearance issues. I'm sure it can be done, but I'd consider myself a master of entering service mode (takes me about 20 minutes top, 10 if I have someone else with me) so it was worth it.

I agree. I had not put the A6 in service position before and wasn't sure what it entailed so I skipped it. I honestly don't remember how I got everything out but I made it work. I can tell you it was an awful job and made me never want an AVK, ever. So much more space to play on the 1.8T.

For reference, I'm at 14.4V at idle, positive battery terminal to ground, which is about what Torque measures. Voltage for me measured through Torque stays fairly stable as well, only going down if I'm using the seat heaters and/or the rear defroster.

Hmm. I'm sure there is reason for the differences. Maybe your running a Valeo alternator? I also don't think my battery is 100% charged. When I picked it up from Advanced Auto off the charger it was at about 80% of the CCA rating. Not sure about voltage though.

Maybe mine could be on its way out too lol. On the highway it's 13.6-14.2. Been like that forever though.

Because I hate the dealer and I got a crazy good deal on it. Plus 3 year warranty. I'll keep an eye on voltage the next few weeks and see if anything happens.
