    Question Timing Belt, What Else?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am about to replace the timing belt in my 2003 B6 A4 1.8t. I know to replace timing belt, tensioner, water pump and drive belt (we used to call "fan belt").

Is there anything else I should replace while I am in there?

And, is there anything else I should do while in there, such as detail the front of the engine, check engine mounts, stuff like that?

    Thanks,

    John

Some people change the coolant while they're in there. I actually finished up the same thing today, but I swapped from G12 to green prestone.
It's always a good idea to check your mounts and bushings, and I always clean what I can get to while I'm in there. It'd be good to inspect your hoses
too once the core is off. It's also said the valve cover gaskets usually go around 60k too, so it's something else to save hassle down the road. I'm still new
to the board but hopefully its a good start

Just don't go cheap on the tensioner... I did and regretted it. Uro one failed at 28,000km (17,500mi) after install. The belt jumped two teeth by the time I babied it home. Another tooth or two and it would have been really expensive instead of really annoying. I'll never buy anything Uro brand again.

Ahhhh yes, Uro parts :p. Couple things that come to mind while in service position are visually inspecting for any vacuum leaks (DV line, for example) and possibly front snub mount. Always good to check main motor mounts too for fluid leaks and/or cracking of rubber. If you have a dealer nearby, G12 is right around $22-23 per gallon and can save ya some additional money during your repairs.
