Aftermarket 12" subwoofer custom installation in Q5 with Bang and Olufsen system

Hello -- new member here. First post.

I recently purchased a used 2012 Audi Q5 2.0T that was loaded with all the options including the Bang & Olufsen sound system. I didn't have a chance to listen to the sound system before buying the car but read a lot about it online and was looking forward to an amazing sound system since I'm a music buff and I need my tunes when I drive. My previous car was a 2010 BMW M3 and it had an amazing loud and clear sound system (~800 W)-- so i had high expectations of this system especially after watching all the Youtube vids on it My first experience listening to the stereo was extremely underwhelming (no bottom end) and matched the opinions of others -- not loud enough and no bass. Since I listen to house music mainly- I was compelled to change this immediately. There's not a lot on the internet to see that is similar -- so I thought I would share my design on this forum.

I brought the vehicle to Ralph's Radio here in Vancouver -one of the oldest and most experienced shops in my city. I told them to use the spare tire area as the place to put the amp and sub assembly since I wanted a stealth installation. I felt little need to keep a spare tire there as I am city dweller and can call a service station if I have a flat. If I go on a long trip I can always throw the spare in the back. I was very surprised at how heavy the spare is!-- it must be at least 60 pounds!

I wanted a LOT of bass so I decided to go with a 12" sub. My install uses the Audiomobile Elite Series Shallow mount subwoofer -- its very cool in that is only needs a 5.9 inch mounting depth -- which fits in the spare area easily. The sub is very high quality and is capable of handling up to 1200 watts.
    http://www.pasmag.com/car-audio/repo...-12q-subwoofer

The best part about this sub it that it only needs a 1 cubic foot sealed enclosure (29L) which is tiny! A box that small is easy to fit in the confines of the spare tire well. A custom vented cover was made with carpet that very closely matches the OEM carpet so the cargo capacity of the rear of the vehicle is unchanged (my #1 priority).

The amplifier is a Hertz HCP1DK Compact series running at a 4 ohm load putting out a clean 740 watts RMS
    http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/wp-co...14_HCP1DK1.pdf

I also have the Hertz HRC Sub volume remote control so I can adjust how much bass there is -- i use it a lot

I added a 1 Farad capacitor to back up the current running to the amp. That's the big black thing attached to the side of the sub box

The back of the vehicle was reinforced with extra sound damping vinyl to reduce vibration and I'm very glad I did because this sub is incredibly loud and powerful. The bass output is outstanding now and hits hard with really clean bass. Even though the bass output is astounding it surprisingly does not overwhelm or drown out the rest of the stereo at all . I highly recommend this combination if you like hip hop or EDM. The transformation is incredible!!

Wow looks awesome. Wish i could see what it sounds like in person. Sadly i wouldn't be able to do the same because i want to put my car on bags so that spare tire room is going for the bag compressor and stuff. Hmmm maybe i can just fit it elsewhere. Like have it built into the side or something. Idk.

Changing a SQ Flat is a pain in the balloon knot... The compressor bull shit, etc...

I'd either limp to dealer or call roadside and then use my wheel/tire warranty.

Nice install! I was tempted to nix the spare for a larger enclosure but took the easy way out and just picked this up today:

It's a molded fiberglass enclosure fitted to replace the drop-in B&O 6.5" ported plastic drop-in. Volume is somewhere just over .5cf with the 10" Hertz Energy ES F25.5 driver. I picked up a Diamond Micro 1 to sandwich behind the factory B&O amp in the wheel well.

I'm also replacing the 3" B&O midrange drivers in the dash for a set of CDT ES 3.0 or Hertz Millie MP 70.3.

It's custom from a local fabricator. Expect a price range of $300-$600 from most reputable car audio shops and the Hertz driver is $180.

The enclosure is deceptively smaller than expected, due to the offset hub flange inside the spare wheel. I hunted for days to find a prefab solution but there's nothing that exactly replaces the spare by dimension or fits into the cavity of the spare with sufficient clearance for the hinged false floor.

If you don't mind ditching the spare and can live with an 8" subwoofer, this prefab box should fit into the tire well, leaving a platform for the amplifier:
    http://sklep.basser.pl/en/fit-box-en...enclosure.html

The enclosure should ship from Poland for a super-low cost of $135, and I'd recommend filling it with a JL 8W3v3-4 paired with a JL XD300/1.

Not sure if you know this, the spare tire tools and your battery are under where they mounted your amp. Hoping they made it easy to remove otherwise you may have more issues than just a flat on the side of the highway.

Any idea if the shop that made this for you would make another?

Long time audiophile and audio installer, capacitors are useless in general especially with your setup. the q5 alt has more than enough output for your setup. If you feel the need a small battery would better serve your needs. If you doubt my claims checkout any audio forum no one runs them. Not trying to cause problems just passing on a lil info. Install is nice by the way
