Raspberry Pi 3 connected to Audi A4 B8.5

    Hey guys,
I'm working on/wanting to do a project for my Audi. I've seen people put Apple TV's etc into their Audi and use it on the screen but why think so small. Why not put a computer in your Audi. The Raspberry Pi 3 just got announced which has Bluetooth and wifi built in. This would allow you to connect things Bluetooth to it and connect to the cars wifi hotspot with a computer as small as a credit card. Why you may ask?

You could do fun things with the Audi screen including playing retro SNES games with Bluetooth controllers right inside the car for fun.

Just curious if anyone has recommendations on all the cables, etc to be able to accomplish this. Help would be great!

Also wondering if anyone has hooked a computer up in their Audi or car before.

    Andddddd GO!

We all know what "fun things....including playing retro SNES games" means. Just be careful. We don't need another headline like this....

This is a great idea as long as you stay safe like ToddBrunswick said. I just recently purchased a PI3 and they're awesome. Good luck!

Interesting concept. I don't have any suggestions for interface solutions but I hope you're able to find a way to make this work.

Nice! I'm thinking about getting one. Using my RPi B+ right now as an ad-blocking DNS and time machine back up.

Off the top of my head I think of either diagnostic or logging (eg. pull data and throw into graphs). You could even take it further by not only pulling data but pushing data like a VAG COM.

If you need coding help, let me know.

Idea's on best way to set up this up? Power Inverter ideas? , HDMI to plug into Audi plugin converter for cheap but good? I don't wanna spend too much, but I don't want to buy the cheapest crap so it breaks. All the help will be appreciated to make my dream a reality!

check out xcarlink and similar. i know the older one had just the composite a/v ports, but i believe the newer ones have hdmi capability. i have the older one and mainly use it for the backup cam, but it lets me hook up anything with the red/yellow/white a/v cables and display that on the screen. installed in the glove box, and connects to some harnesses behind the screen and radio unit.

I like what you are doing here. I'm and Automation Sales engineer. Let me know what you need if you decide to go CAN or CAN OPEN. I deal with R-PI and Arduinos all day. More specifically let me know if you need anything EtherCat based. Id like to see what you do with it.

HDMI won't work as that's video/audio. You'll need to use the GPIO (general purpose input output) pins or possibly USB.

I think I have it figured all out now and it will be even cheaper than I though because you don't need a full power inverter as its so little power you just need a higher powered USB car charger like for an iPad. Here is my list of needs to make the basics work.

So I need the Raspberry Pi, a case, micro usb cable with a high powered car USB plug, SD card, Bluetooth mini keyboard, Audi Mmi to RCA cable, Raspberry Pi 3.5mm to RCA cable. And I have myself a complete computer in the Audi!

Any recommendations on where to buy a cheaper Audi cable... $80 for genuine cable is crazy talk.

All you need is Audi Mmi to RCA cable, Apple TV, hdmi cable, power inverter, Apple TV power plug, male to male RCA cable and HDMI to RCA converter :)

This is the RCA cable but I don't wanna spend $80. Cheaper anywhere else???

My goal is to put the raspberry Pi in the center console and run the 3.5mm to RCA wire to the glove box and then plug it into the Audi cable. That way it's easy to access the Pi and USB ports etc.

With the raspberry Pi do you think it would safer to have a case with a fan on it to keep it cool?

Yes absolutely. There have been reports of really high temps on the board. But as someone that has built tons of computers, you always want more fans if that's an option.

I think this only works if you have B8.5. B8 AMI is audio only.

Most of the B8s should have MMI 3G which supports video, but some of the early models do have the 2G I believe.

Well if I punch in 2012 A4 on Audi's website, they don't show my the AMI-RCA cable, but if I change to 2013, they do.
