Mobil 1 0W-40 On Sale (Formulation Changed, Does It Really Matter?)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The Mobil 1 0W-40 Oil is on sale (after rebate of course)--up to $15 rebate for 5-Quart Jug (Purchased from a list of participating retailers; Amazon and Walmart included) [Max: 2 rebates per household]

I came across a few comments from another forum pertaining to formulation changes on this oil. Not sure if it really has any impact on Audi owners.

I believe it is $12 rebate per 5-Quart Jug
    2 5-Quart Jugs = $24 rebate

The best deal I've come across so far without rebates is Amazon's 6-Quart Pack for $27.99 (Plus Tax).

Half of the people on here with swear by it, the other half with tell you it's the devil and the last half doesn't care.

My personal take is that engine oil is the SINGLE most important factor in maintaining your motor so I don't buy oil that's on sale. I splurge and buy expensive stuff from Germany. When I say expensive I mean if you change your oil twice a year it's $40-50 more a year maybe? My recommendation is don't skimp or even mess around with stuff that might not be up to snuff.

I've been using Motul's 5W-40 Synthetic Oil (Made in France) for the last several months; engine has responded a lot better ever since, perhaps Motul's formulation is explicitly performance-based; hopefully that doesn't imply increased accelerated wear and tear on the engine. Have been driving more locally lately, and I'm used to topping the oil off more often now. I remember making a thread last year regarding oil. Most owners seem to have favored Mobil-1 whereas others went with Castrol or Shell's Rotella.

There were also talks in the past where some experienced more noise and noted cam wear as a result of using Mobil's oil. Not sure if this is imperative though.

I would go with German-based oil as you put it, but I'm stuck with a year's worth of oil now. :D

I agree, better to stick with the best and let go of the rest. I'll definitely keep a close eye on the engine now. Hopefully, shouldn't have an impact on engine seals especially.

I've been using Mobile 1 for 20+ years in 5 cars now doing a change every 12 months or 10k miles. 3 of those cars went over 100k miles (one actually had 110k miles when I bought it). The other two cars have had Mobile 1 since new and are at 40k+ each.

I think your math is off a bit.
    Half swear by it
    Half say it's the devil
    The other half don't care...
Seems to be 50% more than 100% if my math is correct. ..
