    Headlamp replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Let me start by saying that I searched, and couldn't find anything :)

So the previous owner of my S4 when and put some thick 3M plastic protection over the headlamps. It's really ugly, and have now bubbled on the underside.

Do I have to replace the entire headlamp, or is there a way to just replace the lens? I doubt I can remove the plastic cover without wrecking the lens.

Use a heat gun to make it pliable and it should remove somewhat easier.

I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

It's not a film, it's pretty thick. And there'll be quite a bit of residue.

I read somewhere that you can replace the lenses. Not sure where to get them though. Not a cakewalk to replace either

Hoping to find some answers on this.

The LEDs tend to burn a line into the back of the lenses too. Anyone know what to do about that?

That I have never seen. Curious if it may be related to the 3M protection you have on

Posting it in the detailers section may be more helpful.

B8 or B8.5? I have a set of headlights I would give up for relatively cheap

I put some very thick protective film on the headlights of my Tacoma. Stuff was super thick and sold through weather tech. When I went to take it off I had to use my heat gun and it took a lot of time. I then had to go back with Goo Gone to get the junk left behind off. Pain in the butt for sure.

I bought the Lamin-X brand of headlight clear film protection. It wasn't so much a film as it was a 0.030" thick translucent slab. I ultimately did not install it, but used it as a template to cut out my own Xpel Ultimate .008" thick overlays.

I'm thinking you have the thick laminex covers on your headlights, and I have to guess that using a heat gun to loosen the adhesive would work for you.

The haze can be cleaned if you open up the headlamp housing. I have it on mine too.

like others have noted I'd heat gun it to make it pliable and remove. adhesive remover of some sort and after that use some high grit sand paper and water to wet sand it to look pretty again. same method of restoring lights that have a haze on them. follow with plastic compound.

Try to use a steam cleaner and pull at an angle, not straight outwards.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, and for the offer of the headlamps. (2010 B8, so they can't fit, though I love the pattern of the LEDs in the B8.5)

On removing the cover (too thick to call it film), prob not gonna happen as I live in a condo, and have no power source for a heat gun/hair dryer. Best is if I can just change the lens, but if need be, I'll look for a 2nd hand headlamp assembly.

Another S4 has the same cover, and exactly the same issues arose - bubbling and the LED haze line. Could be that too much heat is trapped in the lamps.

Just buy these and swap lenses. I upgraded from halogens to used ecodes for my 2010 a4. The used ecodes lenses were bad so I took my halogen lenses and swapped them and haven't had any issues for the last two years.
